Tim Jankovich: One Easy Step To Success

I'm not so sure that he exactly put us on the basketball map (are we on it?), but he's a great coach and a good guy. I wasn't too happy when we let him go.
I wasn't happy either, but he left on his own because he didn't get along with Helwig.

There was also a little thing called a bloody divorce that he was going through

and his wife was living away from him. She, to my knowledge, never showed

up at a NT event, and with the AD situation and the Administration was not

behing the athletic program, he decided to get his life in order and do so by

getting in a situation that was less stressful.

JJ is enjoying a much better situation than Jank and Trilli experienced at NT.

Things might has been different for Jank and Trilli had they had a budget that

allowed for assistant coaches making very little money, and therefore you only

got kid coaches and very little in the form of travel expenses.

Don't get me wrong, but things were quite a bit different for Jank and Trilli.

Jankovich was a promising coach when he was at NT, who did get fired and did not handle it very well. He was fairly successful against Southland Conference squads but not so much when NT moved to the the Big West, a much better basketball league. IMO he was just a little young and inexperienced when hired at NT. In his defense, he was put into an bad position when NT moved to the Big West and was smart enough to know that Helwig scheduling for income philosophy would spell doom. Obviously, firing anyone and hiring Trilli was a big mistake. Another example of bad NT athletic administration decisions, instead of trying to increase funding for basketball with reasonable scheduling and support a good young coach; they decided to play an impossible oc schedule to fund the program. Whether Janks oppositon to Helwigs' scheduling approach or Helwigs' desire to hire his buddy Trilli was the primary cause of his dismissal, it was a bad decision.
