UNT Just Won Its Biggest Sports Championship in 71 Years

There is no friendly way to say this, so let’s just rip off the band-aid: UNT isn’t exactly the national standard when it comes to athletics.

The Mean Green are nothing to scoff at, mind you. You’re doing something right any time your athletic director can stroll into a room and deliver an elevator pitch including 16 Division I teams, 130 conference championships, and arguably the baddest defensive lineman to ever play football.

Nevertheless, despite being founded 110 years ago, UNT has all of four national titles to its name. Those championships come in one sport, too: men’s golf, during a colossal four-peat from 1949 through 1952. A hell of a run, and also the sort of thing that’s liable to get people wondering what the roadblock is for literally every other sport in every other moment in time.

It really pisses me off even after such an accomplishment they'd minimize the achievement. I know to expect as much, however it's not fair to the players to minimize their accomplishment. I really wanted to fire off a terse response but decided the writer wasn't worth the effort.

I don't think he was minimizing the accomplishment. He's clapping back at those who downplay the win.

"My retort to this is a simple, ever-so-loving “Get lost,” because UNT—UNT!—just won the second biggest tournament in college basketball. That’s an achievement worth celebrating for any school, and especially one whose athletic pinnacle came in the year Eisenhower took office."

I just saw one of those smart ass remarks on Next Door about how were the 69th best program in the country. Something good happens and they want to piss on it. Makes me angry.

A few facts that lead me to believe we are a little better that "69th best."

1) FAU in the Final Four. They beat us by 4 points twice. That alone shows we belong in the discussion of best teams in the country

2) Best NET ranking that didn't make the tournament. Our NET ranking was solid, but I'd say we were underrated at 39.

3) UAB making the NIT final. This just shows that the conference as a whole was underrated.

I know, I'm preaching to the choir.

Truth is - there isn't THAT much difference between the 20th ranked school and the 100th. Once you get to a certain point, all the teams can play quality basketball, and on a given day can beat almost anyone else.
