109 years of UNT football

109 years ago today, the North Texas State Normal football team took the field for the first time when they played TCU. It was a rainy day , and TCU shut out North Texas on a 13-0 final score. North Texas was coached by J.W. Pender and TCU was coached by Fred Cahoon. Here's to 5 fabulous seasons of UNT football!

They had been using Green and white since about 1907. One student remembered that  "Someone suggested Mother Nature would be kind to those using her colors".

So, we've had "those" students since the turn of the last century.

When I first came here there was a pool out there between the union and library, no water in it, but none the less.

Swam there as a kid.  They closed it when they determined it was too shallow for a high dive.  Seems they could have just lowered the high dive and kept the pool.  Nice scenery back in the day.

    • We lost 4 of our top 6 or 7 defenders from last year (KD, Nixon, Gaddie, Robertson) A defense that was also really bad. To suggest we didn’t lose much is misleading.  I agree the coaches failed to hit the portal enough on defense. But at this point it is what it is. Morris and Caponi are trying different looks to find something that works, but that’s not going to happen after a few weeks. Especially, after working on installing the 3-3-5 since the Spring.
    • Silver, I did say “good UNT teams”.  Not, good “winning” teams.  I know, “ whose on first”. Those teams did bring the fans out.  And no, I would never advocate dropping to 1AA again.  No conferences with SFA or Lamar U.  We live or die in FBS.  Just my opinion.
    • You mean like all of the bowl games that we lost with Fine at QB? Three of the FIU games where we got our butts kicked. That La Tech game we lost after going undefeated leading into the game and blowing it in front of probably the largest crowd of the year......or for a long time. Going 4-8 in 2019....losing the last three games of that year.   I could go on and on.  Sorry Phil. But when we played teams with outstanding defenses, we almost always lost......even when running up good passing stats.  Proportionally, we brought in just as many fans when we were having good years in 1-AA. In fact our first sell-out EVER at Fouts was against SFA in the late 80's. According to the people who regularly sneer at our 1-AA days they didn't care that we were 1-AA. Someone promoted the game to them and they came in (proportionately) record numbers.
    • IMG_0977.mov     My 7 year old had an absolute blast last night!  He’s a scrappy squad member and the pregame festivities were great for him. The march, the on field, bounce houses, etc. The in game experience was really good, too. The fan cam, the shirt toss, the pyrotechnics, etc. He said to me, “Man, North Texas has really stepped up its game.”  😂 Drone show was fantastic!  Just a good night. I believe any first time attendees last night will be coming back for second game.   Maclin also gave him a high 5, but I couldn’t pull my phone out fast enough for that pic.
