When the "Bowl Era" was going strong, I was a recent NT grad. I had been going to games for 5-6 years, became a season ticket holder, and was thinking that bowl games were just going to be the norm at NT.

Taking the bowl run for granted, I never made it to any of them. I always had something in the way, and just assumed it wasn't a big deal because I could go the next time I had a little extra money, or when it was easier to get off work, etc.

Nine years later...I've now also gone through one of the most painful times in NT history.

I'm posting first to tell everyone to enjoy every minute of this season. Go to games, read the articles about NT, tailgate, brag to your buddies about NT, etc.

Second, go to the bowl game if there is any way humanly possible you can. My wife is not a big football fan, and she has seen me go through the dark days, and has seen my regret over missing those bowl games, and has pretty much insisted I go wherever it may be short of Hawaii.

Finally, those that are in my boat, and took those bowl games for granted and didn't get a taste of that time, share with the new group of fans and lets all enjoy this as much as we can!!!

First lets get a bowl bid first. This seems early. Makes me more nervous

If we get a bowl bid go, if out of town go early and spend time with other fans there are lots of events. It makes it even more rememberable and fun. You leave feeling being part of something much bigger. The energy is fantastic. I went to three, 2002, 2003, 2004. If it is Hawaii go even then just work around and find the deals. (I have found if there is a will there is a way) I know it would be harder for most but after the last 9 years damn.

      The bats have definitely been the biggest disappointment the past two years. The run support simply hasn't been there enough. Now, I'm still optimistic for the tournament. Last year we won three straight to make it to the title game. But that double bye would have been nice especially if we only have two reliable pitchers right now.

      Why the NCAA model is dying and will be replaced

      You can rebuild a college basketball rotation to contend at a high level in one year. That is just 8-9 players. And if you get lucky with 2-3 absolute monsters, you can make a run in any given season. Of course, then those 2-3 monsters will get poached by deeper pockets and you will have to start all over again. But still, it is possible. But we can’t rebuild a college football two-deep in one year. That’s almost 50 players that we need to compete at a high level. And as has been demonstrated, any time we get football players who have any kind of success in the NIL era, they are gone quicker than you can say “Chandler Rogers”. Another reason it is easier for us to compete in the NIL era in basketball is because that sport is dominated by guards. There are LOTS of talented guards available in college basketball and some of the very best can fall through the cracks and land with us for atleast a season. And while many people would say that college football is dominated by quarterbacks (and that position is VERY important)… what really separates the elite college football programs from everyone else are the defensive linemen. The supply of 18-24 year-old humans who weigh 300 pounds with the strength to take on multiple blockers while also having the speed to run down a quarterback is no where near the demand. And these defensive linemen usually take a while to develop. But anytime a defensive linemen shows a hint of promise, he gets funneled to the highest bidder and that won’t be us. Which means we will never be able to compete with the SEC or Big 10 in football.
