Video: Dan McCarney talks about Hayden Fry

Last Thursday in Houston, Hayden Fry received the Bear Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

That meant something at Iowa, where Fry coached football for 20 years, and at the University of North Texas, where Fry was the head coach from 1973-1978. It was North Texas State then, and it won 40 games over Fry’s six seasons.

Dan McCarney served on Fry’s Iowa coaching staffs for 11 years before becoming defensive coordinator at Wisconsin, head coach at Iowa State for 11 seasons, an assistant at South Florida and Florida, and head coach at North Texas. His first Mean Green team went 5-7, the school’s best season since 2004.

And now all of you people who have been rolling your eyes every time I mention Hayden Fry, know why he was such a big deal when he was here. It wasn't just about the win/loss record. It was about him going about trying to change the mind-set of this school/faculty/student/alumni base.

I was a student at the University of Iowa and in attendance at a Hawkeye Basketball game in December 1978 when Hayden Fry was introduced at half time as the new head football coach. I still remember vividly him saying to the crowd, "We're gonna win!" even though the Hawkeyes had gone 18 straight years without a winning record. Sure enough Hayden was right as he led the team to 14 Bowl Games over the next 20 years including three trips to the Rose Bowl. Hayden Fry is indeed true greatness!
