Davis goes 8th in USBL draft

04/23/2003

By Tim MacMahon / Staff Writer

Former North Texas swingman Chris Davis was selected by the Kansas Cagerz with the eighth pick in the United States Basketball League draft last week.

The 6-5 Davis, who recently finished his UNT career as the school’s second-leading all-time scorer with 2,254 points, will join the team Friday. The Cagerz are already two games into their season, which lasts until late June.

"I’m going to go and try to get some more exposure," Davis said, adding that he hoped to get invited to the NBA’s predraft camp in Chicago this summer.

"I didn’t know anything about [the USBL]. But it’s a blessing. I’m going to take it and run with it."

Davis, who was named team MVP at Tuesday night’s basketball banquet, said he will be reunited with former UNT teammate Bryan Lucas on the Cagerz. Lucas, a 6-7 power forward, played 30 games for the Cagerz last season before joining the Fayetteville Patriots of the NBA’s developmental league.

Smith undergoes surgery on shoulder

Junior forward Will Smith had an operation to repair his left rotator cuff on Friday. Smith said he had been playing with the injury since late in his freshman season.

According to Smith, he can resume weight lifting this summer and should be cleared for full contact by September.

Tennis team ends regular season with loss

The North Texas women’s tennis team wrapped up its regular season on Monday, dropping a 5-1 decision to SMU on the road.

UNT’s Sandhya Kanury defeated Jenny Langer in flight one to pick up the Mean Green’s only victory in singles play. North Texas’ Benita Bittner took Halley Rambally to a full three sets in flight five, but the Mustangs were able to win the other four matches in straight sets. No doubles matches were played.

North Texas will begin play at the Sun Belt Conference championships in Mobile, Ala., on Friday.

Athlete of the week

Senior sprinter Ananka Clark continued her stellar season by breaking a school record and running NCAA regional qualifying times in three events at the TCU Invitat-ional.

Clark, the Denton Record-Chronicle UNT Player of the Week, broke her own school record by finishing the 100 meters in 11.54 seconds.

Her time of 23.82 in the 200 is the second-best in school history. Clark also ran the first leg of the 4x100 relay team, which ran the third-fastest time in school history (46.02).

The USBL has a team in Ft Worth, and it looks like Chris Davis' Kansas team will be in town on Saturday, June 7th... anyone interested in a making GoMeanGreen.com crowd at that game?

I am sure Chris would love to see us supporting him.
