MOBILE, Ala. - On a historic day of firsts for the University of South Alabama football team, at the end of the day the Jaguars came away with the most important one - the school's first-ever win.

Brandon Ross rushed for a game-high 139 yards and two scores, and Courtney Smith added 104 yards on five receptions - including scoring the program's first touchdown with nine seconds remaining in the opening quarter - to help lead USA to a 30-13 victory over Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy Saturday in front of a crowd of 26,783 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

Hargrove was exactly what a brand new team should play for their first game - a beatable team. Check out the highlights from the game at this link (couple of minutes long)... A pretty full stadium and they are all wearing school colors - we could have an exciting Belt team for the future!

The moment we schedule Hargrove or any gimme game, there will be people wondering why we are not celebrating the new stadium with a big-time opponent.

But screw them, right!

Hargrave is just up the road from me. It is a high school level military academy with one year of PG basically for athletes to get their grades up to play ball for a D1 school. It's not a junior college or anything like that.

The service academies also have a PG feeder system.
