MOBILE, Ala. (11/8/07) You might need to call the North Texas soccer team the comeback kids if this keeps up. For the second straight game it was a three-goal second half rally to propel the Mean Green (15-7) past Western Kentucky 3-1 and into the Sun Belt Conference Championship for the eighth straight year.

Senior Heather Hutyra for the second consecutive game scored two goals in the second half and the Mean Green plays for the conference championship on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Denver Pioneers.

Western Kentucky jumped on the Mean Green very early in the match as Morgan Thomas found the back of the net on a header from a corner kick in the 4th minute of the match. The Lady Toppers held a 1-0 lead into the break, but that’s when the Mean Green for a second straight day rallied.

It was senior Dani Slavonic that got the game-tying goal first in the 62nd minute of play. Slavonic ripped a shot from just the outside of the box that hit the inside of the crossbar went in to even the match up at 1-1.

That’s when Hutyra game the Mean Green its first lead of the game with her 50th career goal. Hutyra scored in the 66th minute to make it 2-1 North Texas. Her second goal of the game came in the 87th minute of play when she got behind Lady Topper goalkeeper Meredith Goodson to make it 3-1 North Texas.

North Texas outshot Western Kentucky 16-8 and goalkeeper Amanda Hall made four saves in the game to get the win.

The championship game features North Texas and Denver for the fifth time since 2001 and the Pioneers have won all four previous meetings. Denver, the Mean Green’s nemesis over the last few years, has won three straight games against North Texas which includes a 4-0 win in last seasons SBC title game.

A win by North Texas would send them to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years and tie a school record for wins with 16.

Way to go ladies! That should tell a few of the skeptics that this team was not ready to "pack it in" after a few tough losses down the stretch. I am very proud of this team and Coach Hedlund for keeping it together and coming back strong. I smell a tournament championship for UNT! Go get 'em ladies! GO MEAN GREEN! GO SOCCER...the REAL football! :clapping:
