According to KRLD, today is when Denton residents traditionally go over to the I-35 bridges and sit in lawn chairs with their snacks and drinks and watch the OU fans drive by. Also according to KRLD, this is sometimes such a problem to traffic that the Denton police have to ask them to move.

We can't get the residence of Denton to regularly attend North Texas games and support their local college team, but they'll go out and watch the Okies drive by?!?!............ :angry:

I remember my freshman and sophomore year at UNT driving top Saltgrass in grapevine for work on Friday and Saturday of TX/OU weekend and the high way being a ridiculous moving party... I got beer cans thrown at my truck just for having the word Texas on my window sticker... it was a NORTH texas sticker... My AC didn't work so I would ride with the window down and I would hear their little frattys yelling obscenities about UT thinking I gave a rats ass...

My junior year when it came around I asked for the trouble when my truck was shoepolished saying... "OU Go back to your Shanties"

I call BS on that story. Doesn't happen. Local media wants to build this stupid game larger than life. Many of the game's fans already live in this area.

But I remember one year (1982?) when homecoming was the same day as TX-OU, and a bunch of us from the band went to McDonalds at 35E & Ave. D (when it had the "chandeliers" made from flying worm football helmets) for breakfast. The place was filled with Okies wearing red - depressing :( . So at least back then, a lot of them did stop in Denton before heading to the Cotton Bowl. I bet a lot still do. Some may even stay in Denton overnight. So I think it's good not to schedule a home game on TX-OU weekend.

Texas/OU weekend does a lot for the Denton economy. A lot of Okies stop in Denton because it's the first place you can buy beer in Texas after crossing the Red River. (6.0 too, not that 3.2 near beer crap they sell in Okla) .... or least it used to be, might have been some wet/dry elections since then.

...Seriously though, I've lived in Denton my whole life and never seen that. I don't know what the context of the story was, but it sounds like someone trying to be funny.

The context was pretty clear. A bunch of Denton residences go out to I-35 to watch the Okies drive by. Maybe it's the team bus with it's Oklahoma State trooper escort that everyone goes out to watch. But KRLD reports that there are enough people out there that it presents a traffic problem, and the Denton people are asked by the police to disperse.

All of you can call BS on the story if you like, but considering what a bunch of slackers the citizens of Denton (and a big portion of the NT student body) are regarding supporting this University and it's athletic programs, the story sounds pretty credible to me.

Well, it's not. As I said, I witnessed the Okie Caravan and the only traffic problem I saw was that the OU fans didn't want to pass the slow moving buses, so southbound traffic was backed up from Corinth Pkwy (where I passed the southbound buses while heading northbound) all the way past the I-35 split.

      Preseason All AAC 2024

      It used to be fun to follow the player acquisition process. I’d pay attention to who we were offering. If a DFW kid committed to North Texas, I’d jump in the car on a Friday night and watch his high school game. I’d scour his Rivals.com highlights too and follow his senior season in the papers. The player was going to be a Mean Green Eagle. Just like me. Maybe he’d have some of the same professors I did and hang out at the same places I used to? I’d invest in learning about him and would follow his career and development for four years. I’d show up to the Spring game to see who looked good. The transfer portal ruined all that for me. It is just too much to track and the payoff isn’t enough. Plus, most of the player movement news at North Texas is that my favorite player is leaving. I’m still a season ticket holder. I give to NIL and MGSF. I’ll show up with my family to every game we can. But I don’t know who these guys are who play for my school now. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football is at the printer and these guys are still coming and going. It is pointless to follow all this movement. Wake me up when the season starts and tell me who our guys are.

      Not at present, but when they receive NIL pay from the school they should be. Why don't we just agree to disagree and see how things play out in the next few years if not sooner. At present its just speculation as to how players will be classified in the future. At age 81 I could be dead by then and it won't matter, at least to me. However, you could find yourself rooting for the HEB/UNT GREEN GROCERS football team trying to schedule a game with a member of the ALLSTATE 12 FOOTBALL CONFERENCE. Who knows?
