Ex-Tulsa basketball player transfers to UNT

Seneca Collins, a former member of the Tulsa basketball team, has transferred to UNT and joined the football team. Collins started 17 games for Tulsa last season and averaged 7.5 points a game.

Coach Darrell Dickey said the school is trying to determine how many years of eligibility Collins will have at North Texas. Dickey is considering the former Duncanville standout at defensive end, tight end or defensive tackle.

UNT basketball coach Johnny Jones said he would talk to Collins about playing for the Mean Green if he was interested in continuing his basketball career and Dickey approved.

Looks like he has good size to play DE.

It has him listed as a senior on his bio, so I take it that he sits out this year and will have one year left to play(2006).

I remember this kid in b-ball he was a very good basketball player. I didnt know if he played football or not. There is a lot of former basketball players turned D-ends or offensive lineman. I had a friend that went to Angelo St. and they had a guy 6' 5 that played b-ball and then his last year decided he wanted to play football and he ended up getting drafted by the Giants. Eric Winston the All American tackle at Miami was a great b-ball player. This could be a big pick up for us. You know he is athletic.

I can remember his name being thrown around in bball as well. I really hope he plays both sports.

I am thinking maybe they want him for F-Ball this year since he did not pay at Tulsa, but B-Ball he might need to sit a year due to transfer regulations.

Anybody else have any insight??

If he sat out, shouldn't he be able to play immediatly.

From the bio linked above, please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it show that Seneca played the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 seasons? Last year was the 2004-2005 season, and it's not listed on that site.

What do you think is more probable, that Seneca averaged 7.5 points each of the last 2 seasons AND that Tulsa forgot to update their player bios with last season's stats, OR that Vito put some incorrect information in his story concerning when Seneca last played at Tulsa?

TULSA, Okla. -- Tulsa coach Doug Wojcik on Thursday said four players would not be returning to the Golden Hurricane in his first season as coach.

Wojcik said he would not renew scholarship offers to forwards Yusuf Baker and Vernell Davis and announced that guard Ryan McCoy, an incoming freshman, failed to meet entrance requirements to attend Tulsa. Wojcik also said guard Seneca Collins had relinquished his scholarship to pursue football.

The moves open four scholarships for Wojcik, who had already given his two available scholarships to junior-college point guard Roderick Earls and 6-foot-9 Bartlesville High School center Sam Mitchell.

Of the losses, Collins, a 6-foot-4 senior guard, had been the most significant contributor. He averaged 6.9 points and 1.9 rebounds and played in all 29 of Tulsa's games last season, including 12 starts. He took part in spring practice with Tulsa's football team.

Okay, I find this really strange. Setting the eligibility issue aside, why does Dickey think that this guy can play football this year. This is not an Adrian Awasome situation. This guy hasn't played football for several years. Can someone clue me in?
