DENTON Dan McCarney thought back Monday morning on the feelings around North Texas a year ago, as the Mean Green began preparing for their first bowl appearance in nine years.

The sense of excitement back then offered a stark contrast to what UNTs coach felt two days after the Mean Green wrapped up a disappointing 4-8 follow-up campaign with a loss to UT-San Antonio.

The Mean Green beat rival SMU early in the season, but lost to their three Texas rivals in Conference USA, including the Roadrunners. UTSA edged UNT 34-27 on Saturday, the final blow in a tough year that also included losses to Rice and UTEP.
