You may not be aware of this but advances in building materials, universal building codes, sprinkler systems, education of the public etc have almost extinguished the chance of catastrophic fires in urban areas. Sure, whole buildings burn when they are in the middle of construction but once complete you're safer than you have been at anytime in the history of urban America. In fact, if you look at the nearly 30 million emergency calls America's fire departments responded to in 2011, the last year data is available, you'll see that only about 5% are even fire related. The remaining 95% of calls fire departments respond to are medical emergencies and car accidents.

You'll see the Alabamas of the world sign 10-15 freshman per year and offer their remaining schollies to mid-major studs, and even lower-end P5 school high achievers (think Oklahoma poaching big12 newcomer-of-the-year Isaiah Johnson from Kansas or something like that).

Guarantee that college athletes are granted an athletic release from a university if they wish to transfer schools 11. Allow the opportunity for student-athletes of all sports to transfer schools at least once without punishment They're seriously not advocating for any additional pay because they fully realize that they are currently being paid for their performance. But isn't that the point - that 95% of fire service has nothing to do with fires -it's all the other stuff, hence the smaller, less expensive trucks. Id be interested in learning about the fronts you suggest that make it a horrible idea.

I was pleased to see several months ago the City of Ft. Worth understanding the shift that has occurred and realizing that firehouses have become more of a Urban Emergency Response System and purchased new trucks, essentially 1-ton pickups, decked out in gear needed for just about everything other than large structure fires. Saves money, makes sense.

I believe it already has. Honestly, FFR may need to change his name to EMT Rick or Car Wreck Extraction Rick or maybe Hazmat Spill Cleanup Rick since firefighters don't really fight fires any more.

I disagree, this type of thing will only serve to separate the big boys even further. They will become minor leagues for money sports and there will no longer be a need for 'scholarships' because the players won't be playing for an education, but for a job like a minor league baseball player. At that point why bother with NCAA regulation and then things like scholarship limits and roster sizes can be skewed in favor of the new minor league schools. I do not watch pro basketball as I much prefer the college version where there are still players that give it their all every game and aren't playing for the money. Should this come down then I just don't see how college basketball will be able to keep its current draw for me.

Though that's not necessarily out of the question based on this ruling, note that they've determined that the compensation package (tuition, room, books, etc.) counts as pay for the service provided (football). Sounds like some of the other replies are based on this assumption too. I'm hoping the primary reason for the unionization is to ensure proper medical care like Harry pointed out. There's no reason to think that their compensation package is inadequate, but for them to end up paying for their medical care after the initial coverage by the University is crap if it's a football injury. I know, we all have old sports injuries that bug us as we get older but that's not what I'm talking about.

I can guarantee that if this mushrooms into the law of the land I will be finished with supporting UNT athletics and following college sports. No more Mean Green Club donations and no more season tickets. I am already having a difficult time justifying the money we spend now so when college athletes start getting paid to boot its time to walk away.

Travis, Todd Dodge sure missed the call on Jamize Olawale didn't he. Seems like Dodge missed on many key points of college football coaching. I liked Dodge, but he was in over his head here at North Texas. How many years of college football coaching and recruiting experience does Coach Mac have? How about OC Mike Canales college coaching experience? How about DC John Skladany? Coach Mac has sent many players to the NFL, so I would summarize Coach Mac knows college football talent. Canales and Skladany both have recruited and coached many NFL players . I trust their judgement too. These professional college football coaches have plenty of authority and experience to rely on, especially judging college football talent. The staff sure found a gem with CB Kenny Buyers, so why not with Josh Greer? The best player wins out, regardless if the player is a veteran, freshman, walk on, or JUCO player. I am no arm chair quarterback, so I rely on the coaches to make the best choices for the North Texas football program. If the coaches choose Josh Greer as the starting QB, then accept their choice. Greer will be a good QB for North Texas.

This would be terrible for us. If they are "getting paid", then there can't be a pay structure, that would be collusion. In other words everyone could just offer a player whatever pay they thought he/she was worth. There is no way a school from the non big money leagues (like us) could ever compete with any of the schools that are in the big money leagues. If this happens, then there will be another split. We will end up in whatever is the top "non paid" league most likely. People will pay attention to it like they do FCS now.

Joe Judge, New England Patriots, was at Apogee on Monday morning to put Brelan through a workout. Sounds like Brelan performed well. There was a player from Oklahoma State in attendance and both he and Brelan were catching punts/kickoffs from UNT-Ex Will Atterberry. Sounds like it was only a Specialist workout, no route running or QB's involved. I don't know for sure, but I think the other player was Josh Stewart although I didn't think he had graduated or declared for the NFL Draft. Brelan had the better showing of the two. GMG!

I don't think its his history per-se, but I recall coach McCarney bringing up Dajon's build in an interview before, in addition to Chico's comments. I'm not saying DW is injury prone, or even susceptible to injury. I'm just saying the coaches have made it known they are concerned with his build and the shots he could take.

Reclassifying student athletes as semi-professional from amateur really muddies the waters. Would (or should) a semi-pro athlete still be considered a student-athlete if they are getting paid for their likeness being used in a video game and apparel sales? Paying college athletes will transform college sports and I don't think it will all be good. There will be winners and losers and I fear NT and its fans will be losers.

Or he is just very unlucky. Luck, plays a role, but physical and mental toughness plays a bigger role. My two favorite QB's, Jordan Case and Scott Hall, were some of the toughest and most durable QB's I've ever seen. During his starting years (78 &79) I read that Case (because of his congenital back ailment) had to have pain shots right before a game in order to be able to play. And I'll never forget that LaLa game where Hall was helped off the field more than once and taped up on the sidelines and then limped back out to play. I've often joked that by the end of that game, just about everything below his waist was taped up. And just for pure durability and/or luck, how about Mitch Maher? I don't remember him missing any games. Four years of starting and a skinny (175lb) QB doesn't get injured?

Mark Emmert tried to propose the 2k a semester stipend to NW players as a part of their unionization and they said, "that's not nearly enough." The sense of entitlement in the younger generation is mind boggling. Gets worse every few years. This is all about the moolah and nothing more. I'll be done with college sports if this progresses.

Special things are in place if DW is named the starter for the next 4 years. Keep recruiting at a relatively high level, omg, the glory days at North Texas are undoubtedly in the near future, 2015-2017. It's exciting.

How about we win and lose with our QB, instead of winning and losing because of them? I'm just as pumped about DW as most everyone here, but a few people need to put the lotion down. We are a 6+ win team no matter who is back there and, if the incoming guys are at least as good as DT, we'll be closer to 10.

This concerns me a bit. If they are up to his standards by the end of August, we'll be facing a much tougher version of the same guys that played last year.

Why the " God help us " reference? Sounds like a silly response. The coaching staff is a better judge of talent, so I trust their judgement on who is leading for the starting QB position. If Greer is the guy, then the job belongs to Greer. I think Greer is a good QB, and can lead this team. DW seems more liable for injury than Greer since DW is so thin as described by other posters. I have read many postings referencing this subject. Not performing during work outs, etc. I read that DW sprained his ankle yesterday. So where does DW fit in the scheme of things now? Is the injury severe enough to keep DW out of spring practice? McNulty is a good QB but is he good enough to push out Greer as the starting QB? McNultly will get more reps now if DW is out due to injury.

They've been building a tremendous amount of these 5-story wood frame apartment buildings here in Houston over the past several years, from just west of downtown all the way out to the Galleria. I've heard some of them have retail - including restaurants - on the first floor. They're deathtraps waiting to happen. One of these days, there will be the "Great Houston Fire". Used like tanks are used in Iraq/Afghanistan? Very capable. It's top configuration is completely designed to minimize American cluster bomb advantages. An A10 would poke holes in it like it was a soda can. But the Ukrainians don't have either of those platforms. Unless the guy is just lights out better than what you have, always redshirt a freshman QB. Giving them an extra year to learn the college game, adjust to the speed of the game, and learn the offense.

Something he hasn't done here, no. But adapting to an athlete at QB is something he has done in the past and hopefully will do here at North Texas. DW will have growing pains, but if he starts now I can only imagine what could be his jr & sr seasons.
