  1. let's just hope UNT shows him as much love as possible from now until signing day... he sure seems like a prospect that some other D1 schools won't lay off of

  2. The Houston QB David Piland played as a true freshman in 2010 after both Keenum and Cotton Turner got injured against UCLA. Terrance Broadway (now at ULaLa) started 1 game after the injuries, but Piland started the rest of the season. In 8 games, he had 2641 yards passing, 24 TDs, and 14 INTs. His 330 yards per game would have been good for #3 in the nation between Landry Jones and Brandon Weeden, but he needed to play in 1 more game to be counted in the official rankings. He redshirted last year. A lot of people say UH is going to be bad because Piland's team in 2010 went 5-7. Keenum would probably be good for at least a couple more wins, but the biggest problem that year was defense which was 103rd in yardage and 96th in points. Last year that improved to 62nd and 35th. Moving up 61 places in scoring defense is amazing. Most think the defense will be at least that good this year. Even if it stays in the top 50 in scoring defense, UH will be ok with our offense. In the 8 games Piland started, we averaged 34 PPG. If you're curious about SOS that year, Piland played 3 out of 8 games against teams that finished in the top 25. The starting Houston RB will be Charles Sims. He was the leading rusher for UH although he split a lot of time with Hayes and Beall. He averaged 7.5 yards per carry. He was also the 4th leading receiver for UH. In 2011, he was 1st team all CUSA. In 2009, he was CUSA freshman of the year. He had to sit out 2010 for academic issues, but in 2011 he made the commissioner's honor roll so hopefully he has that under control. UH did lose their top 3 receivers. There is a ton of talent though and we'll see who steps up. Leading the way will be Deontay Greenberry, the highly regarded recruit who changed his commitment on signing day from Notre Dame to Houston. There is a TON of speed at WR, so let's see if they can catch the ball. Considering our leading receiver Patrick Edwards was originally a walk on and 3rd leading receiver Tyron Carrier originally came to UH for track, it will interesting to see how 3 & 4 star recruits do. They have a lot to live up to. Helping Piland out will be an experienced OL where we return 4 out of 5 starters. UH had 2011 1st team, 2nd team, and honorable mention all conference linemen who are coming back. Losing Sammy Brown and Marcus McGraw on defense will definitely hurt, but we do have 8 starters returning on defense. Special teams will be solid with UH returning our punter and kicker. Interesting to see who will replace Carrier and Edwards on returns. Coaching staff? That is a little bit of an unknown. Levine is a first time college head coach, but then again, so were Briles and Sumlin. He looked great in his first game as head coach beating a ranked Penn State in our bowl. New OC is Mike Nesbitt. He was OC at SFA and West Texas A&M and was very successful at that level. We'll be running the same offense. New DC is Jamie Bryant. He was LB coach at UH last year. Before that he was DC at Vanderbilt.

  4. My dad wasn't around as a kid...yet I've managed not to cause a disturbance in a Dallas strip club over not being allowed to make it rain or someone flashing a "horns down." I haven't pouted when the public criticized my work performance and haven't claimed DPD ownership was picking on me to side with my direct superior. So, sorry, that dog don't hunt Look, I get it. You, much like the blog's author get butt hurt when someone criticizes a former member of the Austin cows. But let's not be so quick to shield a childish millionaire who is no, finally, understanding that talent counts outside of Austin, TX.

  7. Dear Ethan, If you want to be recruited by UNT you should contact the coaching staff. I believe there is a link in meangreenathletics.com for prospects. There will be another football camp held at Apogee later this summer, sign up check it out and earn your offer. Good luck to you and we hope to see you in Apogee playing for the Mean Green real soon!

  9. I think the funny thing is that you have already dismissed Griffin before he has even taken a snap. This young man is a far better quarterback and person than Young.

  10. The difference is that UH has a QB with 8 starts as a true freshman averaging 330 yards and 3 TDs per game. Expanded over a 13 game season (yes, we'll make a bowl this year), that's about 4300 yards and 39 TDs. Not Keenum numbers, but not bad, especially for a true freshman. What RB does UNT have with any significant amount of starts that you could extrapolate to even 1000 yards over a season? And helping out Piland, we have a RB (Sims) who last year had about 1400 yards from scrimmage (821 yards rushing on 7.5 YPC and 575 yards receiving) and 13 TDs even though he split time with 2 other RBs who had a combined 1038 yards rushing and 590 yards receiving. Compare that to Dunbar who had 1465 yards from scrimmage and 12 TDs. Admittedly Sims did play in 1 more game than Dunbar.

  12. I think they're OK if you can get that caliber of a team, then turn around and sign a 2 for 1 (2 @ Apogee, 1 away) with a lower tier team. That balances out.

  13. None of this stuff means much anymore without the QB that got you there and the coaching staff that called the shots. That would be like one of us citing how potent our running game is with Lance Dunbar's stats.

  14. My feathers aren't ruffled, so everything's fine. Guy who wrote the article is a Baylor grad, so I understand now that anyone who disagrees with him about anything Baylor will be irrational...but, not as irrational as taking OTA performance as proof of readiness for a guy who hasn't yet taken a snap in a NFL regualr season game. It's more funny than anything else.

  15. I would expect the UH game to be much closer than last year. Heck, our team at the end of last year versus UH at the end of last year most likely would have been a better ballgame. It should be a good, entertaining ballgame for both teams. I hope the Mean Green nation turns out in full force a la SMU 2006!

  20. Accurate arm. Strong enough to shrug-off 4A defenders. Fast enough to scamper for the 1st down, or create plenty of space on a rollout. Reminds me of a QB who played down the street from me a few years ago... James Franklin.

  24. 1. Doesn't UTSA have a large hunk of their campus within a mile or so of the Alamo Dome? 2. Doesn't that give UTSA a bit of a monopoly on football in San Antonio? 3. The city needs UTSA to draw well for that reason. 4. I agree. I was at our last home game. 5/6. They may pay $40,000 a game but they also don't have up keep, etc. But let's see, 5 home games x $40,000 = $200,000 x 390 years = $78,000,000. Might be a bargain. Predicting their attendance over the next several years is tough, but since they play in a 65,000 seat domed stadium in the 7th largest US city, they might do better than we think. We need to stop worrying about how UTSA is doing and worry more about UNT attendance. Nothing would please me more than to sit in a full house and watch us consistently beat them in football, basketball, and some day baseball.

  28. It all depends on arm, intelligence, and confidence of the QB, and has very little to do with the legs. I think RGIII will be fine because he has the above 3 qualities. Steve Young would have won 3 or 4 Superbowls if the most talented team in 20 years didn't happen to be in the same conference. He used his legs as a last resort. I think RGIII will be the same type of QB. As a matter of fact, Steve Young is a much better comparison than Vince Young.

  31. I remember Dan Marino in college. I always thought he had a strange throwing motion, which appeared very short (kind of like this kid) and quick. Because of his quick and short release, Marino seemed almost impossible to sack or knock the ball out of his hands. I am certainly not saying this kid is going to be Dan Marino. But, give me a tall QB who can get the ball out quickly any day. Congrats coach Mac. Wecome kid !

  34. Today, a large amount of huge commercial developments are subsidized by City's using interlocal agreements. In general, the City's can see a very substantial benefit from them as well. It is usually a win-win, and in the long-run, the increased revenue generated by these developments far outweights any initial tax increases and in time can reduce property taxes.

  36. That he's a far better person than Vince Young, I guess is true. Vince may be a bad quarterback, but he's not sitting in a jail cell. The NFL, though, is the NFL. It has eaten many "can't miss" college quarterbacks. Robert Griffin led lopsided losses his senior year to Texas A&M and Oklahoma State. Baylor squeaked by Kansas State, Missouri, and a ghastly Kansas sqaud. It took a last second pass to beat an injury riddled OU. And, they beat Texas due to the unusual circumstance of the 'Horns not being able to find a QB. I'd say Griffin inherited the right set of consequences in 2011, many of them not of his own making. The perfect storm for him and Baylor. The more honest scouts went ahead and said he was risky. He is risky. And, more risky than most based on the few big wins he had over his career. The NFL separates the men from the boys, and does it in a hurry. Washington is desperate to win. And, their owner is a certified idiot when it comes to meddling in his team. So, he also was the beneficiary of the perfect storm int he draft.

  45. Agree. And the scene evidence will bear out whether ZImmerman's story is accurate or not. The problem is people on here, in the news media, and in America in general, don't seem to care about this evidence. They either want him in jail or want him to walk free. Idiocracy at it's finest.
