Belt Bowl Snubs - A Good Reason to be out of the Belt

WKU football fell victim over the weekend to the same bowl snub that struck MTSU a year ago. Both teams felt their success on the field was overlooked in the bowl bid process. Both were mostly correct.

This year’s WKU team went 8-4 overall (4-3 in third place in Sun Belt Conference) and won head-to-head over Arkansas State 34-31. ASU finished in second place with a 5-2 Sun Belt mark, but only 7-5 overall. Yet ASU still received the GoDaddy.com Bowl bid over the Hilltoppers.

The 2012 MTSU squad went 8-4 overall (6-2 in tie for second place in Sun Belt) and won 34-29 at WKU. The Hilltoppers went 7-5 (4-4 in fifth place in Sun Belt), but still got the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl bid over the Blue Raiders.

Benson is innovative and shrewd, and that latter trait may have pushed ever so slightly toward those bowl omissions. But he is also doing what’s best for his conference.

Sure, if by innovative and shrewd, you mean two decades of having your conferences implode, member schools fleeing from you as soon and as fast as they can, and constantly rebuilding with junior college upstarts.

Also, when UNT and MTSU were playing on television in 2012, Karl Benson did a halftime interview from the pressbox, overlooking the field. Behind him, the Mean Green were warming up for the second half. Not one time in the interview would he acknowledge that the Mean Green were in the conference or were on the field that day. Instead, he went on and on for about ten minutes about how Middle Tennessee was going to be the flagship school of the new and improved Sunbelt.
