Is Anyone Else Concerned

Imagine what some of our scores would have looked like last season without Truman Spencer or make that the last four seasons. That is a big hole for them to fill and the thought of a freshman punter scare the daylights out of me. I would like to see this one sewn up sooner than later but the best ones always take their time.

It was my understanding if we don't land a Punter that Knott would pull double duty

The punter situation is a big question mark as Harry has noted and it is indeed bothersome--a HS punter with a 34 yard average does not inspire confidence, All-state or not. (He could develop so I assume a solid evaluation has or is underway.) But equally or more important than the punter isssue is the deep snapper issue. Last season we saw evidence of what happens when you don't have consistent deep snapping when our regualr deep snapper was injured. This is a position can cost you football games!! This must be addressed and reliable depth behind this guy needs to be developed in the spring and summer!! This is serious and should not be overlooked in recruiting. The staff might even want to consider a scholarship for a deep snapping specialist.

Some people just look on the dark side. NT has made an offer to Chris Boswell ...class 5 A all state kicker...who will play in the Army Bowl game.

Rivals has Boswell ranked as there 5th best kicker. He's a 3 star recruit, and I think we are the only offer he has right now. So, if he signs, he should be pretty good.

The whole recruiting situation now is so stop-gap now at almost every position, it's disheartening. Vizza is really the only hit. You can argue for the running backs. But, when you really look at it, we've never established the run game early under Dodge. Most of our ground yards come after we're way behind and our opponents have begun to pull starters.

Here, again, we're probably going to have to gamble on a JUCO punter since Dodge didn't seem to look at the depth chart and recruit accordingly. As to the deep snapper question, many schools now give scholarships to those guys. However, I think most are earned after the guy walks on and proves himself. There are exceptions, I'm sure. But, they're probably at the bigger programs who are deep enough to gamble on giving a deep snapper a scholie from day one.

North Texas has an excellent deep snapper on the team now!

A good suprise developed right under our noses.

Troy Kokjohn, listed at 6-2, 278. If you remember the K-St

game, our DS, Christian Davidson, got hurt early in the game.

Troy came in and handled all the punt DS's perfectly, blocked

his opponents, and I think he also had a tackle or two.

Troy has played in several games handling extra points

and punt deep snapping. He also plays OG. I think he is

a redshirt freshman, so he will be at NT for several years.

I am not worried about deep snaps at all!

I giggle every time I here this name. I know, 7th grade. Carry on...

Punters can be a very valuable commodity and deserve a scholarship apart from a placekicker. I don't know how well Boswell punts or what his high school average was. If we've offered and he accepts then I suppose that it's over. However, if he doesn't, Jorge Martinez, the punter at Fort Worth Northside averaged 42.4 yards per punt last year and was 1st team all-state in Class 4-A. If Boswell can't come close to those numbers then I think that we should withdraw and go in favor of the better punter.

kickers and special teams are greatly undervalued.

It's been posted earlier about Martinez...he suffered an injury in the last game of his season....don't remember exactly but a torn ACL in his leg...don't know the status of his injury and how, if any, it affects his ability to punt, kick.
