Mean Green Basketball Loses Season Opener To No. 18 Baylor

Waco, Texas (11/10/06) –Bernice Mosby scored 15 points to lead the No. 18 Baylor women’s basketball team to an 84-47 victory against North Texas in the Preseason WNIT on Friday night at The Ferrell Center.

The Mean Green (0-1) loses its season-opener, while the Bears go to 1-0 overall and 17-12 in the series against North Texas.

Mosby scored eight unanswered points to open the second half, increasing the Bears’ lead to 19 points, 43-24 with 17:37 on the clock. Baylor continued its second-half run, outscoring the Mean Green 20-6 in the first 10 minutes.

Baylor took its largest lead, 71-31, on 62.5 percent shooting from the field with 8:06 left in the game. Sophomore Tricia Lee responded by leading North Texas on a 12-8 run. The point guard scored back-to-back layups in the spread.

The Bears’ defense held the Mean Green to 23 points on 25 percent shooting in the second half. The Baylor offense shot 54.8 percent from the field in the second period, hitting 17 of 31 baskets.

North Texas had trouble holding onto the ball and Baylor capitalized. The Mean Green turned the ball over 28 times in the game, and the Bears scored 36 points off those mistakes.

North Texas kept Baylor within single digits until the end of the first half. Baylor went on a 10-2 run to close out the first half and go into the locker room with a double-digit lead.

The Mean Green had several opportunities to take the lead in the first period. Jackson brought North Texas within one, 19-18, after scoring off a fastbreak but was unable to complete the three-point play on the free-throw line. Jackson scored nine of NT’s first 18 points, making four of NT’s 10 field goals in the first half. The sophomore was held scoreless in the second half.

Amber Jackson led the Mean Green with 10 points, scoring six in the second half. The sophomore was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.

Mosby led three Bears in double figures. Danielle Wilson collected 14 points, while Rachel Allison followed with 10 points.

North Texas returns to action on Friday, Nov. 17 when it travels to Virginia to play Hampton.
