Quinn injures hand in practice

Receiver to see doctor today

11:42 PM CDT on Monday, August 21, 2006

By Brett Vito/Staff Writer

North Texas wide receiver Johnny Quinn injured his left hand during the Mean Green’s morning practice on Monday and watched the afternoon session with his hand heavily bandaged.

Quinn said he was not sure if he broke any bones and will visit a doctor this morning.

The senior is one of the key cogs in the Mean Green’s offense and was a Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference selection.

The former McKinney standout has led the Mean Green in receiving in each of the last three seasons and ranks among the top eight players in school history in receiving yards (2,085), receptions (130) and touchdowns (17).

“We will see tomorrow morning, but if it is up to me, I am going to play,” Quinn said.

The Mean Green have just 11 days remaining before opening the season with a game against Texas in Austin on Sept. 2.

Losing Quinn would be a major blow for UNT, which is looking to bounce back from a 2-9 season. Quinn is not only the Mean Green’s top receiver, he is also heavily involved in UNT’s special teams as a punt and kick returner.

“Johnny has been an outstanding player for us as a receiver, a blocker, a special teams player and a leader,” UNT coach Darrell Dickey said. “We expect big things from him this year.”

UNT would have to dip into perhaps the deepest position on its roster if Quinn has to miss time. UNT returns its top four wide receivers from last season, a group that also includes junior Brandon Jackson and seniors Joel Nwigwe and Zach Muzzy.

Our star player went down with a hand injury and another guy really started to shine in his absence. If Johnny's out (which I don't want, since he provides leadership as well as skill) then I imagine Jackson really showing his stuff.

I don't want to hear any more of this optimistic gobbledy-gook. You need to stick your head in the sand with the rest of us until we get a report that this was a minor injury that won't affect him whatsoever.

for most the optimistic talk will probably come to an end around 3:00 PM pm September 2, then maybe the rest after September 9th (let's hope not but OOC track record speaks for itself.). sad.gif
