  2. I just got home from the East Texas UNT football camp at Chapel Hill. There was one QB that stood out above the rest - about 6'1" - 6'3" or so; hard to tell from the stands. Not stocky but had meat on his bones and a helluva arm. His passes were accurate; could go deep with ease; and the ball has some mustard on it, especially on the out patterns - he was clearly the best out there, and Canales was very interested in him. He hung on to him after the camp was over and spent quite a bit of time talking to him; and then making sure that McCarney met him and offered encouraging words. I think this guy "went on their list" along with the many other QBs they have pegged on their list from around the state. As for the rest of the crowd of players (50 - 52 in my last count) the coaches were interested in the Tyler Lee kicker/punter - plays on the soccer team (according to t-shirt) and punts and kicks. He was kicking field goals from 55 yards out with plenty of room to spare - high elevation by what would have been the line of scrimmage (hard to block, and God knows UNT has had its share of problems with blocked punts over the past 5 – 6 years); his punts were high with good hang time (4 - 5 seconds my guess) - averaged punts of about 45 yards. There were a few receivers and DB's with OUTSTANDING speed – in fact blow-away speed and quickness. A couple of the DB’s had great coverage in seven-on-seven, and three or four receivers combined speed/quickness with very good ball-catching ability. Given what little I profess to know, I would have on the spot offered 3 - 4 of the guys attending the camp - don't know, of course, what McCarney will do. McCarney is a master in so many areas. He was greeting not only the high school coaches in attendance, he was also greeting and hugging the “water crew” while remembering their efforts from last year; he also remembered the CH trainer from last year’s camp at CH and spent time visiting with her. After play was over McCarney gathered the participants around him and emphasized the players being coachable for their high school coaches; he emphasized character; he told them that he had enough problems without having problem players……so he would not recruit such players, and that few other university coaches would either. He spelled out in precise terms what he expects from his players – representing their families, high schools, and UNT well in everything they do. He told them that missing class was not an option and he mentioned the high GPAs that some of the current players have earned. One other difference from last year – temp was in the 80s instead of the 100+ of last year. GMG

  22. An extreme comparison, no doubt, and a comparison made to illustrate a point. Isn't it interesting that liberals are supposedly tolerant, yet they are only tolerant of those who share their beliefs? While I will disagree heartily with Pres Obama on the issues, you won't see me calling him a liar or attacking his character or family. I simply don't agree with his ideas. Go back and look at the political threads. 9 times put of 10, when it turns personal, it is a liberal turning it that way. I get that liberals operate more on emotion (everyone deserves health care!! How do you pay for it?? That doesn't matter, it makes me feel better when everyone has health care) than conservatives. I just wish they would stop personalizing things.

  31. This fee should be raised the maximum amount EVERY time it is eligible to be raised. Otherwise, we are just not being serious about our athletic programs. Yes, outside revenue raising also needs increasing, but we should not be ignoring ANY opportunity to raise funding for athletics.

  32. The fact that he used the Penn St football program and his status within said program to lure, groom, and subsequently molest young boys with the knowledge of the Penn St administration is amd will continue to be the most egregious example of lack of institutional control in the history of college sports. But Penn St plays in the Big 10, one of the now 5 conferences that control the NCAA, so they suffer no penalty. And your right, TFLF, SMU's crimes don't hold a candle to Penn St. In a just world, Penn St would lose football for at least 5 years.

  33. I have a huge problem with Penn State being let off the hook for knowing about what Sandusky was doing, but still allowing him full access to the campus, using Penn State property and pull to continue to lure these kids in. More than anything in the on the field athletic realm, this more than all makes the NCAA a sham to me. SMU donors give college kids spending money and cars. Yeah, it was cheating. But, it wasn't allowing the rape of children by an adult authority figure. That SMU got the "death penalty" and Penn State as an institution will go unscatched is wretched. And, Joe Paterno...his legacy is rightly tarnished by the whole thing. Being the winningest coach and having a "clean reputation" meant more to him than doing the right thing. He hid his friend's behavior for years. Horrible. I said it a couple of months ago, and I'll say it again now...if the choice is between becoming the wretched money-grubbing, win-at-all-cost monsters the Penn States, Texas', OUs, etc. have become and only winning occassionally because your athletic department does do the right thing on and off the field - give me what we have now.

  34. Count me amongst those that will be rooting for the Cajuns this year (outside of playing us). Having them represent the conference in the New Orleans bowl is probably the best case scenario for the league. They posted 42-44k attendance in a game against a West Coast based team that likely didn't bring more than a couple thousand!! Unlike TFLF, though, I'm not calling for us to run roughshod against anyone who has a decent QB and receiving corp this year---our entire secondary is newcomers!! Granted, they might actually be improved athletically over last year's group---but it's not likely that they'll be better.

  35. Hope this doesn't repeat! @ DallasGreen. The game in Lafayette last year was a great crowd! 32,823 reported attendance. Pretty sure that is the top Sunbelt conference game crowd. It was our top home attendance crowd last year; but comes in at #5 all-time. 2009 we hosted Southern University. Crowd was 41,357; much of which was due to Southern fans as they travel VERY well! We've hosted Texas A&M (38,783) and Alabama (36,133), and our old-time rival McNeese (33,828) in 2007. That said, for a Sunbelt conference game, the one with you guys was outstanding. Hoping I can make it up to Denton this season to see your new digs! Hope both teams are healthy. Should be a good game. Shof

  36. Gun ranges are fine, but an open piece of land offers more chances for shooting different types of targets and even an obstacle course. I know some people lke them and some dont. but I am hoping that maybe if some of the people who hate them would want to go and they can see that guns are not evil like some want to make them out. Who knows, maybe they will actually enjoy shooting. Personally, I find it an enjoyable activity. And then there are some on here who do own firearms, or who would like to shoot, and this would be an opportunity for a get together.

  46. Nevada 1990s isn't Nevada 2012, coming off a 7th consecutive bowl trip. And, "hosting" at Texas Stadium? Kudos to Texas State's athletic department. I'd love to have Tech and Nevada at Apogee. Nevada would be an excellent gauge of where we are. Tech, of course, would mean a sell out, with the possibility of television.
