  1. Let it not be lost in this news that Holston graduated in 3 years. That makes me proud of him and the program. He deserves a Congratulations and a Thank You for you for a job well done at UNT!

  2. This is the best possible scenario for this coaching staff. You rid yourself of all the guys at the end of the bench and/or non impact players; creating 3-4 more scholarships. Obviously, Z Simmons needs help down low with fatigue and constant foul trouble. This allows 1-2 additional big men to compete better against bigger and better competition. Lawson, I feel, can easily be replaced with someone more suited for this offense and a higher IQ. I appreciate his service to the team but he was so lost out there. I would go get a legit big man (6-9 or 6-10) that can pound down-low. Another PF/C type and the best wing in the 6-6/6-7 range. I think we are ok at point but could use another true point guard, other than Woolridge. (I know about the early commit in 2019). There are at least 3 scholarship available next year (Duffy, Miller & Tope) This is just a golden opportunity to really take the next step, if addressed properly. With 3-4 available, possibly a grad transfer, juco transfer, HS kid(s) and maybe the best transfer that can sit out next year. I wish we could start keeping some DFW kids home but there is an impressive transfer list (Verbal Commits) looking for new homes. This goes to show that in basketball, you don't need 3-4 years to turn a program around. In about 12 months, this coaching staff will have had about 11 scholarship to fill.

  3. Goes to the Dallas Wings #18 overall (2nd round) in tonight’s WNBA draft. When she was recruited here many felt she looked like Skyler Diggins. Well looks like she will back her up at point guard.

  7. Without a doubt. Also, all the people clamoring for better free-throw shooting, look at the percentages of the guys leaving compared to the percentages of the guys Mccasland actually signed. Benford recruited a lot of guys who couldn't shoot, and Mccasland is recruiting the opposite.

  8. This is good thing IMO. Hang on to Smart, Woodridge, Simmons, Duffey, Miller, Tope. And go add to your talent pool the way you did in year one. And go win CUSA

  9. Hello GMG members! This is the Mean Green Maniac, and after years of following GMG as a guest, I've recently joined! I'm that crazy fan you may or may not have seen at the football/basketball games sporting football pads, crazy sunglasses, feather boas, face paint, and mohawk wigs! Been a MG sports fan since 2009 and endured the Dodge era as did many of us. I'm a UNT employee and an alum of the Green Brigade, and look forward to talking MG sports with everyone! Just wanted to share some exciting "sports" news out of the eSports arena and UNT: https://studentaffairs.unt.edu/news/UNTesports Here is the Official Notice from the president: Dear UNT community, This spring, UNT became Texas’ first public university with a collegiate esports program. At a launch event on Monday, April 16, you can learn more about this emerging sport. Esports is the competitive live play of video games with a cash prize pool. By launching UNT Esports, a program within the Division of Students Affairs’ Recreational Sports department, our students will have a huge opportunity to play on the varsity collegiate level against teams across the nation! Whether you’re well on your way to becoming a professional esports player or someone who has no idea what esports actually is, I invite you to join UNT Esports from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 16, in the University Union Lyceum for an Overwatch tournament. This event promises to be full of fun and Mean Green spirit. Our standout student gamers will help you learn more about this worldwide phenomenon that is the newest professional and collegiate sport. Students also can learn about upcoming tryouts for the League of Legends and Overwatch varsity teams. It’s exciting to see the university continue to respond to our students’ interests and to further develop programs in tandem with industry demand. Last year, the esports industry grossed $696 million in total revenue and is predicted to grow to $1.5 billion by 2020. Come see what it’s all about, and support our students! UNT Proud, Neal Smatresk President I myself am a gamer and I realize this is not a traditional "sport" nor is it included within UNT Athletics/MG Sports, but this is a huge and fast-growing competitive industry, and universities across the nation are taking part. What does everyone think?

  11. Based on his personal background, I was pretty excited about what the Wren Baker hire would mean for our basketball programs and this is yet another evidence of his impact to date. In general, the positive momentum of this athletic department continues to impress and Wren has only earned complete confidence that he's capable of carrying it forward Onward and upward...

  12. Hey thanks for the welcome! I think that is an accurate assessment of the upcoming season. UAB is a strong team and should not be underestimated, but I hope we can beat them again.

  13. Actually, Cooley made it take this turn when he said he wished Vito would be gone...and Bert Frito references got made by one of RV’s pals. I started nothing—just asked the questions that very few have answered.

  18. I like this, although I'll believe it only when I see us beat UTSA down there. Those people get fired up for their Super Bowl every year. Its amazing to see a team in Texas that cares so much about beating us--never dreamed that day would happen. I see us at 9-3 on the top end, but 7-5 on the bottom side. SMU, LT, @ODU, and @UTSA are the tossups that add to strongly probable wins over IW, Liberty, UTEP, USM, Rice. I don't see us beating Arky, UAB, or FAU, either...

  19. What bleeding? These guys leaving are not guys Mccasland recruited. It's a very normal roster transition over a year period for a new coach. Also, we get to use those spots on other players, who will likely be big improvements over the four who are gone. All of the offensive players we have lost so far were bad offensive players. Lawson, you could argue, is not a bad offensive player but he certainly was this year. And he just isn't a shooter which really hurt this offense. When he was in our offense did not look good this year. When we stopped playing him in a primary role, our offense looked immensely better. Same with the other guys we lost. It's not a coincidence how much better this team did with Duffy and Miller taking the majority of Lawson, Temara, and Holston's minutes. Did you not watch the CBI? We looked just as good defensively as we did when Lawson and Holston were playing a lot. While looking leaps and bounds better on offense.

  24. Sept. 1: SMU - W- We really need to win this, losing to them for the past couple times sucks.. First year SMU coach. The game should be in our favor. Sept. 8: Incarnate Word - W. And glad this is in the beginning of the season. More like a scrimmage to help us prepare for Ark. Sept. 15: at Arkansas - L.. I really hope UNT proves me wrong, but hey maybe we can punch a win against Chad Morris finally. It would really set us up for some high attendance in Denton the rest of the season beating SEC. Sept. 22: at Liberty - W, And I don't think it will be even close to a nailbitter. Sept. 29: Louisiana Tech - W- And a repeat type game of last year against them. Oct. 6: at UTEP - W- UTEP gets trampled Oct. 13: Southern Miss - W- I think this one will be really competitive Oct.20: at UAB - L- But this one could go either way. Oct. 27: Rice - W- Simply a W Nov. 10: at Old Dominion - W- Simply a W Nov. 17: Florida Atlantic - L. FAU is doing everything right. EVERYTHING. And I just don't think UNT is firing on all cylinders to beat them. Nov. 24: NutsaCK - W- I'll always mark that as a W. Just because I hate them to the point I think a win should never associate with KFC

  27. We would obviously see a drop in production, but I don't think we would be in "big" trouble. We have more depth and ability at QB than I can ever remember. If we don't see any improvement in our defense that underlined statement will always be true. Early on the only game where we were ahead enough to give Shanbour some actual game experience was the Lamar game. But by the time they put Shanbour in, we were way ahead and Shanbour was told to just hand the ball off. He then went in vs Iowa and proved that we were not "in big trouble" when he was in there. And then there was the overthrow on the fake field goal at the end of the season......a QB with little or no game time, throwing to a TE with little game time. Would it have been different if he had had someone like Bussy (or some other big play receiver) to throw to in that situation? Maybe, but we'll never know. All I know is that in his first appearance vs Iowa he had the most experienced WR's to throw to. In the second situation, even if the pass had been completed, it still could have been dropped after he got hit and/or he probably would have been brought down quickly. At any rate, Vito always chooses to take the most negative view of Shanbour that he can. And as to the rest. IMHO, Pearson didn't look as sharp this spring as he did last spring. And Martin needs a lot of work. I don't know how our other freshman QB will look this fall, but he'll just have to get in line and show what he can do. And meanwhile, (like Pearson and Martin), Shanbour will probably be his mentor. I was hoping that Hardin (#11 from Irving) would get some reps, but that didn't happen.

  28. For the life of me, I can't believe we didn't let Fine pull it more often... several times I think he doesn't stop until he bangs his head on the goal post. Hopefully we add that wrinkle this year.

  29. If you are able to, slow it down or pause as play develops, we have a hat for a hat and you can't ask for more than that from an OC standpoint. We saw something we liked about QB run game around the goal line that game bc we did it several times.

  38. Yeah, can we stop acting like these players are leaving because they wanted to? They were asked to leave, had a talk, whatever. All three saw greatly diminished to non-existent roles on the team this year. Now we can continue to build on the players McCasland's philosophy fits with. This is extremely positive news in my opinion. I wish them the best of luck as well.
    1 point
  39. Not really. I think we all expected to lose Holston and Fuller. I also heard rumors that Lawson would probably leave, but we all hoped he would stay since he was the most well rounded player of the three. We will add a taller Tikohenko, slightly shorter J. Simmons and the three recruits that McCasland now has available. I appreciate all three of these players contributions this year, but they can all be replaced. I am excited to see who we sign.

  43. @Mean Green Maniac, this is mainly for you...(glad you finally joined) Sept. 1: SMU - Sloppy play by the ponies gives us a close W, with the help of the home crowd. Sept. 8: Incarnate Word - W. That's all I've got to say 'bout that. Sept. 15: at Arkansas - Close L, but an L all the same. Prolly a breakaway on a roundabout caused by missed assignments. Sept. 22: at Liberty - Easy W, despite concerns. Sept. 29: Louisiana Tech - Surprisingly convincing W. Oct. 6: at UTEP - W. Oct. 13: Southern Miss - W. Oct.20: at UAB - L. Blazers play the spoilers and get vengeance for last year. Oct. 27: Rice - W. Nov. 10: at Old Dominion - W. Nov. 17: Florida Atlantic - L. Nov. 24: at Texas-San Antonio - W, simply because I have to believe we get it. Finish regular season 9-3, miss the conference championship because the Blazers end up being that good, but win the bowl game against a high-profile G5 to get to double-digit wins.

Rico Vince Randall THOR Kris Balfour greendylan Rob McKinney Ben Gooding Emmitt Will Atterberry Grant Gilbert Trent Justin John Mac Neuroth Daniel Shinohara Ian Diaz Yes, the list is not long, but I have several who have said they will play but never indicated so “officially”. They will simply be added to a team on game day. If I have missed anyone, please let me know...still room and still time...I can make it work. Just let me know. Edit: 😂😂. I obviously have a troll who likes to downvote every post I make regarding this charity event. Funny..very immature, but funny. Appreciate the grins...you and I both know who you are.

  48. The number I heard was 9 million and it came close to doubling the previous record. There was either an email or DRC article that had the exact numbers. I believe those were just 2017 numbers, we are only four months into 2018, so I would be surprised if something has been relased for this year.

  49. I'm not making excuses for our lack of donations, just pointing out that the dynamics of our situation are very different from the other C-USA programs, even our Texas peers within the conference. Due to those differences, I believe our solution will probably need to be different too. In my opinion because our situations are very different, I believe those programs are bad comparisons. Having stated that, I do believe we are seeing gains. I don't believe Baker is content to remain dead last in fund raising. If he were, I doubt he would have placed our donation numbers our there for public scrutiny.
