PlumMeanGreen you make strong points, with smu being a prime example of those that didn't..

One thing I might add about traveling fans and their impact on attendance:

When you look at DFW, Houston, San Antonio, and El Paso, there are a bunch of alumni from the other Texas schools living in each area. As an example, many UTEP alumni who live in the DFW area are more likely to show up for their games here rather than games way out in El Paso. It's the same for our alumni in El Paso, Houston, or San Antonio.

Whenever you have to make the call to a school with an opening, you really have no shot at the job. The have identified the top candidates before the firing ever happens, at least at programs like those in the Big 12.

Don't believe me? Ask Greg Popovich, who, according to rumor, made a call on behalf Danny Kaspar to our AD after JJ left. The call was never returned. Better or worse, RV already had his list of candidates.

I think Coach Mac, even in his early 60s, would be agreat hire at an AQ school. He has enough energy to easily coach well into his 70s. His specialty in turning around dormant programs. I'm serious on this one--if/when Charlie Weis fails at Kansas, and assuming we see a turnaround of major significance here in Denton, KU would be very wise to go after Coach Mac. They have resources, a conference he knows very well, and would instantly jumpstart that fanbase again. If Hayden Fry could turnaround moribund Iowa into a Big Ten champion, Coach Mac could probably do the same at a place like Kansas. Hell, it wasn't that long ago that KU was winning the Orange Bowl under Mangino.

I want Coach Mac to be here for a long time--because of success, I might add, not because he's affordable--but his youthful personality and attitude are definitely not old in any way, shape, or form. Again, this is making the rather large assumption that he actually does turn it around here, there will be down-and-out AQ teams that will go after him because of his MO as a turnaround specialist. Its not hard to see a Kansas or Missouri at least interview McCarney about any vacancies in the near future.

But he would NEVER leave us because he LOVES UNT!!! -sarcasm tag-

Yes, if we managed to win out, win CUSA title game and have a good performance in a bowl, I could see this scenario playing out. Although I disagree about the fan base reaction. I don't think DMac was a sexy hire here and definitely wouldn't be at a Big 5 school.

One winning season and one bowl game should do it every time for any G5 HFC. -sarcasm tag here, too-

Ask another coach at an NCAA FBS school who took his team to 4 bowl games in a row how it got him a bigger job. (I still feel badly about posts I cannot walk back about my opinion of DD's coaching job toward the end of this tenure but never was anything ever close to being personal since you sorta' need to know one personally for it to get to that level).

Why worry about things none of us have any control whatsoever? North Texas is still most of our's toy section of life and one that is hardly worth a gray hair, a lost hair or an ulcer.

BEAT TULANE*BEAT THEM SOUNDLY!

GMG!
