Free throws make difference in Texas loss

Oklahoma made 21 free throws, and Texas shot only 58 percent (11 of 19) from the line, as Oklahoma scored a 66-59 victory in the girls all-star game.

A 3-pointer by North Texas signee Endurance Wali of South Grand Prairie tied the score, 47-47, entering the fourth quarter. But Oklahoma used an eight-point fourth quarter by Mara Kee to help put the game out of reach. Texas went scoreless in the final three minutes.

Kee was named the game's MVP and finished with 16 points. Missouri signee Carlynn Savant of Euless Trinity had 14 points, and North Texas signee Kelsie Edwards of Mansfield Summit added 13 points.

WICHITA FALLS - Carlynn Savant of Trinity scored 14 points, but the Texas girls all-stars went cold in the fourth quarter and fell to Oklahoma 66-59 in the Oil Bowl Classic basketball game at D.L. Ligon Coliseum on Thursday.

Kelsie Edwards of Summit added 13 points for Texas, which led the annual game 31-29 at the half. Erica Parker, silent for most of the first half, was hot in the second, scoring Texas' first six points on three consecutive field goals. She added four points in the fourth quarter and finished with 11.

"It just sort of happened; the options were open," Parker said of her scoring spree. "It got kind of rough in the beginning, but it was nice flowing."

Oklahoma wasn't fazed by Texas' defense, which forced numerous turnovers. Led by game MVP Mara Kee, who had 16 points, Oklahoma appeared more poised and made the extra pass when necessary. Samantha Stovall scored 11 points for Oklahoma.

Savant, who has signed to play with Missouri in the fall, scored six consecutive points as Texas trimmed Oklahoma's lead to 59-58 with less than three minutes to play. But Nikki Yager and Kee scored two and four points, respectively, to put the game away.

I saw Edwards play last year, and she is a solid player. The word on Wali is good, too. Looks like the women have a freshman class that can contribute early...

Ditto on JJ.  It'd be nice to be competitive with Indiana in the Colesium next season.  I'd hate to be embarrassed at home.

Hopefully we can bring in more tradition rich schools like the Hoosiers in the future.

We were embarrassed at home a few years ago vs. Oklahoma State. I brought a friend to his first UNT/Trilli basketball game....needless to say he thought we had a long ways to go to get to OSU's level. sad.gif
