Tx Hoop's Notes: From this weekend's Great American Shootout (Free)

http://texashoops.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1239069

Several big-name college coaches were in attendance the first day of play. Among those were Texas Tech's Billy Gillispie, Oklahoma's Lon Kruger, Central Arkansas' Corliss Williamson and North Texas' Johnny Jones. … Former NBA all-star Clyde Drexler was in attendance coaching the Houston Preps. His son, Adam Drexler, is a forward on the team.

According to event organizers, they had attracted over 400 division one coaches through Sunday and given the often swollen coaching crowds we saw, it's easy to believe. On Sunday alone we saw head coaches from Baylor, Kansas, San Francisco, Texas Tech, Marquette,Texas A&M, North Texas, Kansas State, Maryland, Colorado, Villanova, Stephen F. Austin, Houston, Oklahoma State, Northern Colorado and Arkansas to name a few and most of them were joined at the hip by assistants. We also noticed assistants from the likes of Missouri, Missouri State, Georgia, Texas, Gonzaga, UNCW, Louisville, Texas State, North Carolina, TCU and many, many others.

Alex Robinson, PG, DJH5

Yet another talented 2014 player from Texas. The rising sophomore point guard attracted a head coaching crowd that included Texas' Rick Barnes, Texas Tech's Billy Gillispie, Texas A&M's Billy Kennedy, TCU's Jim Christian, SMU's Matt Doherty, North Texas' Johnny Jones and Fresno State's Rodney Terry. A quick lefty who is lean and has some length to his 6-foot-1 frame, Robinson is a natural dribble-drive playmaker and is at his best in the open floor.

Niem Stevenson

of the Dallas Mustangs is a physically impressive 6-foot-3 combo guard. He's athletic, can get his shot off and seems to have deep range. Right now, he's a bit inconsistent but if he figures it all out he's a high major sleeper. Stevenson listed an offer from North Texas (head coach and assistant were tailing him) and interest from Arizona, Arizona State, Texas A&M, Colorado, SMU, Houston, Missouri State and Clemson.

Sure is nice to see UNT and JJ mentioned with so many other big 6 schools. It may have taken 10 years, but JJ and staff have done so much for the reputation of UNT here in Texas and nationally. Fans are one thing, but I can guarantee you that every D1 coach in the country knows who "JJ" is and I'm sure give him more respect than the average fan from their respective Big 6 school's.

Thank God RV offered JJ the UNT job and JJ accepted. Sometimes it takes "oh, a decade" to see what you've been blessed with.

Go Mean Green...Go JJ!!!
