C U S A - Searching For Purpose

"The most heated rivalry in C-USA is Houston-Rice. (It's no coincidence that the Southern Miss game I'm most looking forward to this year is the renewal of a former conference showdown, with Louisville, because the Cardinals still feel like more of a rival than anyone left in the league.)"

One point he brings up is the lack of rivalry for most schools in CUSA. Same for UNT in the SBC. Mainly because of our location on the far western boundary of the conference we have no close rivals. The closest conference opponent is ULM almost 300 miles away, too far to shout hatred at or steal their mascot, whatever it is? When we start the series with Smut then you'll see some real hatred!

We know that we'd rather play SMU, Houston, Rice, UTEP, Tulsa, etc. but do they care about playing us?

I worry that hating another university (SMUt???) may cost us a vote (or votes) when conferences are expanded or realigned.

Since few CUSA schools are close, the suggestion to split along geographic lines is a valid one. It would create more interest and save a ton of travel expenses.

UAB would have more interest in Troy and eventually South Alabama than UTEP or Tulsa. UCF could easily build a rivalry with FAU and FIU. Western Kentucky and MTSU are closer to Marshall and East Carolina than other current CUSA members.

The west has similar patterns. The problem might be with the more central teams of Southern Miss, Memphis, Tulane, and Arkansas State. East or West? I don't know their preference but I think that we need a Hayden Fry type to start laying groundwork for such a split.

There is absolutely nothing UNT could do to get SMU to support us in ANY conference realignment. The only choice we have is to kick their butt anytime we get a chance ( 2014 is a LONG time away while they now schedule SFA,etc.)
