Something To Think About.

I’ve just started thinking about the boast we can get in recruiting for 2009 if Jamario can put together another season like he did his freshman year. He was a top ranked I believe 38th in the state as a recruit and the 2nd best RB. He won the NCAA rushing title as a freshman and is currently listed as a top 20 RB going into next years draft. I agree buzz TD has brought in is already helping being in better talent but the top tier guys want exposure and to know they are going to be drafted into the NFL. If J-mo can have a huge year and get drafted on the first day next year I think it will go miles towards getting more 3, 4 and someday a 5 star player in here. Just a thought now discuss.

how will J-Mo have that kind of year while touching the ball less than 10 times a game (see spring)? Good luck with that.

I'm not saying it's going to be easy but Tre was able to get some big numbers in Todges system. If J-mo can do the same he's already got some respect across the nation. A big year by him that gets him drafted maybe second round just gives Todge alot more ammo when talking to higher rated recruits who actually have NFL potential.

The spring game was not indicative of what our running game is going to be. The starting RB in this system will get far more than 10 carries/game, and will have much more running room/bigger lanes.

Tre Newton had 274 carries, 2010 yards, and 20 TDs in their 16 game season last year. That's an average of just over 17 carries/game.

I have no idea what will come about, but I'm pretty sure J-Mo (er, the starting RB; hopefully J-MO!) has a shot at 1200 yards, and at least 12 - 15 carries/game.

I hope you're right. Carroll ran for big yards in this system, pre-Newton also. I'm not convinced TDodge is convinced J-Mo fits all the criteria. I want to see more in fall camp, 'cuz spring ball pretty much kicked the running game to the curb...albeit out of necessity. Maybe we're looking at some kind of gradual moving of J-Mo more towards a total yardage specialist, i.e., Taurean Henderson at Texas Yechh. But 20 carries a game...forget it.

Then you have to factor all the times he came out of games early due to lopsided leads late in games.

Whether or not J-Mo get s the carries is not the question...he definately will get the opportunities.

The question is whether or not he can do something with the carries he gets.

I am a HUGE J-Mo guy, and I know he has had less than stellar lines, a one dimensional offense the last couple of years, and has had to fight off the hammy issues, but I have not seen the guy from his freshman year...he has to be that guy again, or we are going to see an new face...Cam Montgomery.

With that said, someone will be be getting carries, and I would anticipate somewhere in the range of 20-25 carries a game.

I can see SpJmo easily getting 20 to 25 carries a game.

Rick

As an inherited back? I'd be shocked. Are you saying that, in addition to the modest number of touches JMO gets as a receiver on short routes, he'll get an ADDITIONAL 20-plus carries out of the backfield?

That's a pipe dream big enough to redo the plumbing at the Pit, but I hope I'm wrong.

I think we're all forgetting a few things in this discussion.

1)Spring was almost exclusively committed to a few very important things. Figuring out what we had in our QB's...which necessitated a heavy concentration on the running game. And installing a new offense where the forward pass is legal. That, again, necessitated concentrating heavily on the passing game because it is much harder to pick up that the running portion of the offense.

2)Todd Dodge's "spread" for the millionth time is not the Mike Leach offense, if anything I'd say it's closer to the Rich Rodriguez one. If the other team excels at taking away the run we will bomb them to death. If their front seven is their weakness J-Mo will see a heavy workload that Saturday. Will he hit 1800 yards again? Probably not but I don't think 1000 is out of the question.
