NEWPORT, Rhode Island (9/26/05) – Blustery conditions greeted the North Texas men’s golf team at the first day of the Adams Cup of Newport, but that didn’t stop freshman Harris Graham from posting a top 10 score after the first 36 holes.

Graham shot a three-over par 75 as the winds wrecked havoc on the entire field with only one player shooting under par in the first round of play. In the second round Graham fell back with a 77, but remains only six shots behind the leaders at 152. No player fired a two-round score of under-par as the conditions at Newport National Golf Club worsened throughout the day.

North Texas is alone in eighth place after back-to-back rounds of 310, 17 shots behind the leader Texas A&M who carded a two round score of 603.

Austin Welch rebounded in the second round with a 76 and posted a two-round score of 154, two shots behind Graham and tied for 18th place. Anthony Broussard is two shots behind Welch after a second round of 77. KT Livingston is at 158 after the first day and Andreas Kali fired a score of 164.

The field of 17 teams features such powers as North Carolina, Houston, Iowa State, Georgetown, and Texas A&M. In a tightly bunched group, North Texas sits only 11 shots behind second place South Carolina-Aiken heading into the final round.

The third round of the 12th annual Adams Cup of Newport begins tomorrow with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
