Not shocking that they picked two older gentlemen and were prepared for an armed confrontation (since they were robbing people leaving a gun range, after all).

And generally speaking, most gun ranges do not allow you to have a loaded firearm in the facility, outside of the range. You have to unload it and carry it in a gun case. Thus, you are technically unarmed until you are on the range, at which time you take the weapon out of the case and load it.
