The Real McCoy: Transfer from UT-San Antonio leads the way for T-Birds

Nick Kosmider

Mesa Legend The Mesa Thunderbird men’s basketball team is off to a 3-3 start in the tough ACCAC, due in large part to the contributions of guard Adam McCoy.

McCoy has been an offensive machine so far this season, averaging 23.6 points per game, good enough for third in the conference.

For the week ending in December 10th, McCoy was the ACCAC Division I co-player of the week, sharing the honor with Yavapai’s Tom Whitehead.

He won the award due, in large part, to his 28 point, 13 rebound performance in Mesa’s 90-65 thumping of Pima Community College.

He followed that game with an astounding 35 points and eight rebounds in a thrilling victory over Chandler Gilbert.

While the Mesa coaching staff knew they were getting a complete scorer, it has been McCoy’s all-around game that has helped the Thunderbirds.

As well as his 24 points per game, McCoy is also averaging 5.5 rebounds per game.

Also astonishing has been McCoy’s poise from the foul line. So far this season he has made 93.5% of his free throws, making good on 29 out of 31. McCoy is also among the team leaders in steals with nearly two per game.

While McCoy has been the team’s go-to guy, he has certainly had help from other members of the Thunderbird team.

Rodney Brown has helped provide a balanced scoring attack with 12.1 points per game.

John Pena and Brandon Pickerel have also made solid contributions to the team’s offense averaging 10.7 and 11.2 points per game respectively. Pickerel is also averaging 6.4 rebounds for the T-birds.

The next chance to see McCoy and the rest of the Thunderbirds at home will come on January 24th at 7:30 as Mesa takes on South Mountain Community College in an ACCAC showdown.

Texas San Antonio Roadrunners

(19-14 overall, 11-5 SLC)

Projected starting five:

Sophomore guard Kurt Attaway (last year's freshman of the year in SLC and led the team with 105 assist)

Senior guard David President (led team with 55 steals last season)

Senior forward Raphael Posey (second on team last season with 11.4 ppg)

Senior forward John Millsap (started 16 games in '03, has tremendous upside)

Senior center Anthony Fuqua (led the team with 42 blocked shots)

Coach Tim Carter is really going to miss the SLC's leading scorer LeRoy Hurd from last year's championship squad, but he has four returning starters and a lot of depth on the bench. Add that with junior college transfers center Ray Salvage, guard Andre Owens and high school recruit Adam McCoy and you get another SLC championship. Many polls and sports gurus have the Roadrunners earning another NCAA tournament bid and I have to agree, because in my mind they are still the champions until another team beats them for the SLC crown.
