Harker Heights' high jumper Jamison signs with North Texas

Harker Heights standout Jermaine Jamison is taking his high-flying act north – the University of North Texas to be exact.

Jamison, a senior high jumper for the Knights track team and the 2007 District 13-5A high-jump champion, signed his national letter of intent last week and said North Texas was the right place for him.

"I had a couple of options, but I thought North Texas was the perfect fit for me because of the environment and because they have a very good business program," Jamison said.

Although Jamison had football scholarship offers from Texas-El Paso, Mary Hardin-Baylor and New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M., he said we wanted to continue to high jump at the next level.

"I'm excited," Jamison said about jumping for the Mean Green. "My coach left me last year and my coach this year has been doing her best coaching me, but at the collegiate level the coaches are spic and span with everything they do. They make sure that you are on the right diet and doing the right weight training."

Despite turning down the football offers, Jamison said he will walk-on to the North Texas Football team, but his main focus will be the high jump.

"I expect to be able to become one of the premier jumpers coming into my freshman year," he said. "I want to try and beat out the jumpers that are already there and make a name for myself."

Before heading off to Denton in the fall, Jamison will try and advance to the state track meet for the third consecutive year at the Class 5A Region II track meet next week in Waco.

"It all comes down to this part of the season," Jamison said. "You either do it or you don't. You have to get over that certain height or you go home. My goal is get over that height and go to state."

Couldn't find stats, but the Waco paper had Jamison on the Central Texas top 25 a few notches ahead of B.J. Lewis.

Soooo he's signed a track scholly with us and agreed to walk-on in football. Can Dodge comment on a kid in a situation like this, or is it still an un-signed kid because he's not within the same program?

If he signed a track scholly and plays (makes the roster) football then the scholly becomes a football scholly per NCAA regs.

Now I am confused-

Johathan Ieans was a 6-5 QB , recruited by DD. Was switched to WR,

then gave up football last year.

Jon Ieans--no relation to Johathan--was a WR recruited by DD, left the team

to transfer to Southern Arkansas, left S. Ark. to come back to NT as a walk on WR.

Is this the correct explaination on the "Ieans" mystery?

Please advise-

Thanks

Charlie, I believe that we are talking about the same person. Jonathan (Jon) Ieans was a WR until his senior year in high school. Upon the graduation of Vince Young, Ieans became the quarterback at Houston Madison? for his senior season. He was recruited as a quarterback but enentuallly wound up on the fourth unit here as a quarterback so he switched to his old position. Since we never wore our wide receivers out, and he was locked again behind Quinn, Nwigwe, Jackson, Muzzy and others, he transferred to Southern Arkansas. Now, he's back.

this guy seems to be a pretty good athlete and maybe with some fine tuning he could really develope into a good football player but he really didn't do too much statistically at the high school level.. His senior season he caught 25 passes for 238 yards and only 1 touchdown according to the Austin American-Statesman, and wasn't even the best reciever on his team.. But like I said, this guy is a tremendous athlete, and maybe alittle fine tuning will make a difference

From Keith7's post, and the TexasPrepExtra report, aparently several teams wanted

him- ATM, Baylor, duke, Ok State, and Penn State. Reports that he signed a LOI

with ATM. These schools must have seen something in this kid.

He could be another hidden gem- diamond in the rough. Glad to have him! Great speed!

He looks like a great athlete that came from a team that did not have a

very good season, could be the supporting cast was not that good.

Not to discredit anyone, but that has to be the weakest "Top 25" (at 13-25) list I think I have ever seen. What other Top 25 list have you seen where West Texas A&M has three commits, three didn't sign anywhere and Buffalo, UMHB, Kilgore and Cisco each have one commit??
