Ok State Senate Passes Bill Prohibiting Athletic

OK Senate committee passed Bill 451, which would ban non-school-related athletic practices for children 13 and younger outdoors or in un-airconditioned facilities when the heat index reaches 95 degrees as determined by the National Weather Service. The heat index measures how hot it actually feels outside by using temperature and humidity.

Sen. Earl Garrison, D-Muskogee, said the bill was requested by physicians in Muskogee. "The problem is that when you're talking about non-school-related activities, you may not have people who have the training like school coaches, and that is our major concern," he said.

Good move. How many times have you heard of a high school or college football player passing out or dying while practicing outside in the heat?

temperature + relative humidity = heat index. Its a difficult forumla, but I believe there are charts. Besides, if you have to ask, its probably too hot to be out anyways.

Besides, this is a great law because its targeted at kids 13 & younger, it doesn't apply to "toughening up" high school players. Although coaches still need to be aware of the danger it can pose.

I was about to comment that this bill would completely get rid of any August football practice, but I re-read it and saw that it was limited to 13 and under. That's a different story, and that's not a bad bill.

I guess where my question was lost is that is a coach going to have a thermometer and whatever device to measure the relative humidity right there on the sideline (or wherever) during practice? I am asking very practical questions (or at least I think I am) ... :ph34r:
