UNT Monday afternoon practice notes

UNT continued to steam toward the end of spring practice this afternoon and closed Monday’s workout with a scrimmage.

The big winner at the end of the day was probably Derek Thompson.

UNT’s returning starter went 4-for-5 on the opening drive of the scrimmage, which Reggie Pegram capped with a 14-yard run. Thompson hit on both of his attempts on the first-team’s second possession, including a nice throw on the sideline for a 24-yard strike to Brelan Chancellor. UNT looked like it would score again, but Darnell Smith fumbled after picking up 7 yards on a catch in the red zone. Thompson connected with Chancellor for another touchdown earlier in practice.

Andrew McNulty worked with the second team and also did some good things. He might be the best runner of UNT’s quarterbacks. He threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Brett Renger on the final play of practice.

Brock Berglund worked with the third team, which went three-and-out on its only series in the scrimmage at the end of the workout.

Berglund showed great athleticism and a sense of calm right before the scrimmage when he chased down a snap that sailed over his head, picked it up and made something out of nothing by scrambling up the sideline.

I gotta say, I don't know what all is going on... But, I did not see Brock being number 3 at this point.

I feel sorry for him. All the hype by Mac, and on this board, he probably feels he has had no luck since high school. The next elite athlete that comes here (I.e. Tony Mitchell, Brock) need to come here under assumed names and tell the coaches/AD to keep quiet. Hype at UNT=Curse

Am I missing something? Is Brock not the newest guy on the block who's just getting over a hamstring injury? I've been saying for months that Mac wouldn't start Brock over the senior captain no matter what.... but I think everyone is reading a bit much into the 3rd string business.
