Travel costs might force Conference Realignment very soon.

The price of fuel is about to change the college football landscape for alot of schools. Check out this from the Scott Slant article about Hawaii's travel costs.

Hawaii athletic director Jim Donovan says the school’s charters to San Jose State and Idaho last season cost $85,000 and $125,000, respectively. The quote for a charter flight to the Fresno State game this year? How about $319,000? It’s going to be really interesting to check out the college sports landscape two years from now.

The rise in fuel costs is gonna hurt all of us smaller sized schools. Travel to Hawaii every other year is gonna be a killer for all of us. The price will be even higher next year.

I can see some conference realignments coming soon due to the price of travel. Maybe all of this MWC/WAC talk isn't such a bad idea after all?

If it costs $319,000 to travel from Hawaii, it must cost the same to travel there.

What about traveling to La Tech?

How is Hawaii going to realign with anyone. The PAC-10 could careless. The alumni is going to have to start sending in more money to the AD. But do not be surprised with the Hawaii Bowl becomes a thing of the past!

Hawaii does have a problem, as not only does no one want them, but there is virtually nothing they can do.

Saw this on the Tech Board recently:

Travel costs from 2006-2007:

Tech: 1,734,943

ULM: 887,153

USM: 1,297,674

I think jet fuel costs coupled with other escalating travel costs will be a deal breaker and soon!!!

---There are a lot of places that are nice places to visit... but you don't want to live there. Your travel is very limited and you don't want to go to the beach every day.

--- I Agree, there are some universities that are really going to feel the increase in travel costs... especially Hawaii, LaTech, and even TCU. I expect non-cof. games to become big money games or rather close. Some of the smaller revenue conferences may change some which includes the Belt and CUSA. Travel costs can be even worse with basketball, baseball, and especially other sports that don't start to pay for themselves.

And that was with Tech having Hawaii at home for football. Bottom line is its going to be a struggle for all of us. Maybe we should push for a conference of NT, SMU, TCU, Baylor, Tarleton and Austin College. No drives over a couple of hours!

Don't forget Texas A&M Commerce and TWU.

With all the other problems: ie: no one at UNT doing their job to better athletics or acquire a new stadium, hoped to be key players not being eligible to play, being in a conference that many posters hate along with what many call an apathetic student body & overall lack of interests is it time to just shut down & move on ?

This is my biggest fear. It would be a very sad day.
