Not football but newsworthy enough to be on here since it involves our Chancellor.

New Developments in Search for Texas Tech Chancellor

A consulting firm will now assist the search committee in its quest to find a new chancellor for Texas Tech University. Tech Regents approved the consultant during a meeting in Dallas Wednesday.

Dr. Donald Haragan is currently serving as the interim chancellor since Dr.David Smith resigned in January.

Meanwhile, NewsChannel 11 has learned that new names are now surfacing as potential candidates for Texas Tech Chancellor.

Sources tell us that Tech regents are talking about three people right now as possible candidates for chancellor. They include Lee Jackson, Charles Matthews and Karen Tandy.

Right now, Lee Jackson is the Chancellor of the University of North Texas System in Denton, TX. Before this position, he served as Dallas County Judge for 15 years. He was a state representative from 1976 to 1986. He received his B.A. from Duke University and his Masters from Southern Methodist University. We contacted Jackson's office, he did not return our call.

The next potential candidate is Charles Matthews but for now he has no plans to leave the Texas State University System. That's where he's been the Chancellor since 2005. Before that, Matthews was a Texas Railroad Commissioner and Mayor of Garland. He earned his B.A. at the University of Texas at Dallas, his Masters at Texas State University, and is completing his doctoral studies at the University of Texas at Austin. NewsChannel 11 contacted Matthews who says while one of his four children is a Tech alum, and he did help former Texas Tech Chancellor John Montford with fundraising for the university, he has no plans to leave Texas State.

The final name of possible candidates has close ties to Texas Tech. She's a Texas Tech alumnus and 1977 graduate of the Texas Tech Law School. But currently, Karen Tandy is the Drug Enforcement Administration Administrator in Washington D.C. She's had that positions since 2003, but has been employed by the Department of Justice since 1979 serving under numerous titles. We contacted her office, but staff told us she was out of the office and would not be able to comment on this issue Wednesday.

You'll recall this isn't the first time a list of names has surfaced as possible replacements. Some of the other names heard previously include: Former Tech Deputy Chancellor Dr. Mike Moses, Former Congressman Kent Hance, Former Tech Regent Brian Newby, Former Speaker of the Texas House Pete Laney and current Federal Coordinator for Gulf Coast Rebuilding Don Powell.

Regents say ideally, they'd like a new chancellor in place by the fall semester.

Texas Tech Health Sciences Center is also searching for a new president after Dr. Roy Wilson announced he will be leaving to take a chancellor's position at the University of Colorado.

We're told the regents are expected to discuss an interim replacement at next week's meeting.

As important as athletics are to the Tech traditions?, there is NO WAY anyone in Lubbock is stupid enough to hire Lee Jackson. I think his best bet at getting out of Denton may just be to work somewhere as an "Assistant to the Director for the Procurement of Caffine".. Truthfully, I dont know if LJ can make a pot of coffee or not, but I would hire him for that? He couldnt possibly screw THAT up?

Of course, any of his BS ideas slip out, or his "visions" of the future... and he's toast.

Just the opinion of one....

GMG!!!

Hey, Texas Tech just downright stole Jerry Moore away from us back in 1980 after ol' Jere' took Fry talent and made it very average in only 2 years. So maybe the Techsters will look back at the success of that "steal" and then hire ol' LJ away from us?smile.gif Hold it! Wait a minute, let me re-evaluate that thought; you know, the Jerry Moore part of that thought?smile.gif

Prediction: LJ will be with us for awhile longer. His main strength is in the DFW Metroplex, not at home on the range where the deer and the antelope play (when not blinded by a west Texas dust storm, that is).
