Our JUCO recruiting is not good at all. we haven't been attracting top jUCO talent even though we have had several spots where a starting spot could be easily won. Something isn't right. And the ones we are getting are not that impressive and have worse offer lists than our hs recruits. Only jones has been a solid contributor the last few years.

Since he had so many losses from his first couple of classes, the only real option is to replace their spots in those classes with some select JUCO players. Otherwise you end up with unbalanced graduating classes.

We pretty much add 25 players each year, as attrition occurs you have to balance their replacements with JUCO/High School depending on your roster. While you can't build depth via JUCOs, you can potentially fill a gap with a short term player.

Here's the deal with the JUCOs we have brought in under Mccarney. The ones with good offer lists and good production have been pretty good. The ones without have not. With JUCOs it's pretty much "what you see is what you get." Not like high school where you can really develop a kid and end up seeing a much different player than the one you brought in.

Here are the JUCOs Mccarney has signed, looking at their offer lists and JUCO production, followed by how they fared here.

2011:

- Andrew Power - Solid offer list (committed to Tennessee at one point as a JUCO). Good JUCO production.

Verdict: Panned out. Two-year starter. Key player.

- Brent Osborn - Not very impressive offer list. Decent production

Verdict: Didn't pan out. Little success in small sample. Very rarely played.

2012:

- DQ Johnson - Not very impressive offer list. Little production.

Verdict: Didn't pan out. Never really played a snap before the game's outcome was decided.

2013:

- James Jones - Great offer list. Great production.

Verdict: Panned out. Two-year starter. Key player and our number 1/boundary corner on our 9-4 team.

- Shawn Mckinney - Decent offer list (about 7 schools, with 6 FCS programs then us). Decent JUCO production.

Verdict: Semi-panned out. Saw plenty of playing time including being a one-year starter. Although most would agree that our o-line experienced a big dropoff when Mckinney replaced LaChris Anyiam in the lineup.

- Quenton Brown - Good offer list. Decent production.

Verdict: Didn't pan out. Was entrenched in our 2-deep but suffered two torn ACLs. Injuries were the problem, not talent.

- Justin Manu - Good offer list. Solid production.

Verdict: Didn't pan out because NCAA ruled him ineligible. Had jumped into the two-deep, was pushing Anyiam and likely would've started this year after Anyiam left.

2014:

- Josh Greer - Relatively unimpressive offer list. Decent but limited production.

Verdict: Still has two-more years but has not panned out to this point. Struggled mightily in his three starts this year.

- Akii Smith - Good offer list. Unimpressive production (honorable mention in not a strong JUCO conference, rather than 1st or 2nd team).

Verdict: Still has a year left but has not panned out yet. Played very little and did not make 2-deep. Has value with team as a pass-rusher, as he was used at times on third-downs.

- Darren Denucci - Good offer list. Good production.

Verdict - Didn't pan out. Left team after 1 practice.

So basically, if you can get a JUCO player who was productive and/or has a good offer list, you can get a guy worth the scholarship. There are plenty of JUCOs we're going after who fit that bill. You have to be able to outrecruit some schools to get these JUCO guys worth taking.
