  1. We knew UTSA on the road would be tough. We knew that La Tech and W. K. were probably losses and wouldn't be close. We knew this was coming. That being said, if I knew 10 weeks ago that we would have a chance to beat two struggling teams and go to a bowl.... with this roster.... I would have gladly taken it. I like where we are and I like where we are going. See everyone on Saturday. Beat Southern Miss!!!
  2. I know we tried to recruit #91 Cedric Johnson. He had a lot of attention from us and from SMU. He didn't want to stay close to home and told both not to bother. He got an offer from La Tech early, liked his visit, and locked in his choice. We tried, he wasn't interested in staying in the area.
  3. Still way too many in the "wait and see" mindset. We have a new A.D. We have a new coach. We are playing well and getting better each week. We still have a chance to get into a bowl. Pay your Mean Green dues and buy on the 50. There will always be a reason to "wait and see" if you want to.
  4. Replace a probable win with a probable loss, and just to get a P5 at home? Why would you do that? The P5 programs bring us in for a win. We bring in Lamar for a win... same thing. I'll take the Cardinals instead of the Orange and hit 6.
  5. Love the triple option.... except when I have to stop it. My last year as an OC in an area high school, we were a triple option team. We didn't throw for 300 yards on the season, but we rushed for over 3000 and half our completions were for touchdowns. It is a great offense and most guys that know how to run it or stop it are retired. Go Mean Green! Beat Army!
  6. The 2001 team got to a bowl a year ahead of when they should have. They got crushed by Colorado State. It was wonderful! They could play in Beirut and I would find a go.
  7. My favorite that doesn't get enough credit is Bron Beal. I think it was maybe Gene Pool he took over for, but I do remember that NT beat TCU 24-20 with Beal running the wishbone. If I remember correctly, he played minor league baseball and enrolled at NT after damaging his shoulder. He could throw just enough to keep people off the running game. I think his fullback was Monte Moon (another name that doesn't get enough credit).
  8. Was wanting Rice to beat UTSA. Wanted the Chaps to spit the bit. Could see UTEP winning every one of their games until ours. The Herd was 10 yards away from getting their season finished in October. Southern Miss beats Rice by 16 then gets beat by UTSA by 23, so UTSA should crush Rice... right?
  9. I'm not checking birth certificates and you don't get to play just because the calendar turned. To quote a wise man "May the best man play".
  10. No. No. No.... No to SMU in Dallas. No to anyone else in Dallas. Denton is our home. If they don't want to play in Denton, then we don't play.
  11. An odd front is actually tougher on the triple option than an even front. A nose keeps Army from running the midline. The biggest question is whether they will have 3 in the secondary or 4. We have been playing more of a "50" front the last few weeks. I am curious to see if we will continue with that. It would be easy to play under 4's with the tackles and funnel everything to the LB's and secondary. I am confident that we will be able to stop them, especially with 2 weeks to prepare.
  12. That's pretty consistent for week 5 or so. 2016 M. Tenn 19823 2015 Port St 19801 2014 S. Miss 19127 2013 M. Tenn 21171 2012 Fla Atl 13888 Would love to see 20K next week.
  13. It's really pretty simple. Root for your team. Don't be a jerk.
  14. I've been pleased at how quickly our defense has improved. Week 1, they looked just like last year. They still dive at the ground a little too much, but they have learned to tackle a little. They also are not throwing the ball over our heads all the time. Again, first game looked like the same defense in that regard. Since, we have had a safety in the middle of the field. I allows a lot more throws underneath, but at least with those you still have a chance to get a stop. I still don't see 6 wins, since the conference decided to be lazy and not change the non-conference schedule, but I too have hope for our team.
  15. He played. The announcer even had a little fun with "18 Wheeler on the tackle". Even said it twice. He cracks himself up.
  16. The problem for them is that they were counting on this one as one of the 6 to get bowl eligible. They still have UTSA, P. View, Fl Atl, Charlotte, and UTEP as probable/possible wins. Now, they have to beat someone they are not supposed to beat. When you are 0-4, must beat everyone you can, and must beat either S. Miss, La Tech, or Stanford.....I would find that a little demoralizing.
  17. I see it as extremely lazy of the conference to keep the same schedule as last year. Do your job at the conference office and change the schedule every year. That being said, we probably are not going to a bowl game with this team regardless of the schedule. Looking ahead, it may be a blessing so that we get the bottom of the other side of the conference in a year where we have a much better shot at a bowl game. So, grin and bear it for a year. It should get better next year.
  18. Worries me some. If we are competing with SFA for recruits, it really doesn't matter if we get them. Hope Seth is right and I'm wrong.
  19. McCarney was extended to help with recruiting. I don't think there was ever an expectation that he would finish the contract. But, you don't have a chance to recruit when other schools are able to tell potential players that the head coaches contract is set to expire and has not been renewed. That extension was to give him a chance to recruit (sadly, it didn't work out, but it was a good plan). Peterson was also a great hire...until he wasn't. Should have won here, but didn't and it was the right move to let him go. RV should also get credit for Coach Mitchell. RV was a great hire when we got him. He did fantastic things while he was here, but as he would agree, if the people you hire don't work out, you will be the one to go. Coach Dodge was a disaster and my biggest fault with RV is that he didn't pull the plug sooner. Now, we have to bite the bullet for a while and it is what it is. My thought are: 1) Don't complain about where we are. Just show up. It matters to the kids and coaches now. It matters to the potential players and coaches in the future. 2) Wear your green wherever you go and be proud of your school.
  20. I was a fan of RV, but not a fan of Hank's. He can go anytime. I'll thank him for his loyalty and his service, and wish him well..... somewhere else.
  21. Amen. Don't cheat. Just win.... and then win some more.
  22. This is exactly the way I feel. Show up because it is your school. That is all the reason you should need.
  23. 1) I really hate a cheater 2) If they had not cheated, we would have had 6 wins in 2011 and been bowl eligible 3) I really hate that almost every site that keeps records will still show that they won in 2011 and not that they had to "vacate" all those wins. As evidence, look at when Miss St had to forfeit to us. I would love to find any sports information site that shows that Miss. St. had to forfeit to us. 4) I really hate a cheater.
  24. The 3/3 is actually more difficult to block than the 4/2. It is hard to dictate where the shades of the DL will be set and you have 3 on the second level that are hard to get to. Also, you can easily bring 4 rushers off one side. That is also a pain to deal with for your protection. The 3/3 causes issues for spread teams. If they want to pound the ball at you, you just swap personnel with them when they go heavy. You don't stay 3/3 when they have multiple TE's in the game.
  25. Don't be surprised to see lots of 3/3 front instead of 4/2 with multiple stunts from the second level. If you are thin on DL and have a few more LB, it is an easy adjustment and doesn't screw the secondary as much as you would think. We ran a 3/3 some when we only had two DL that were any good and had several small LB's to go with 2 quality SS. We played man when I had the kids to do it, and zone when we weren't as good at the corners.
