  1. Sometimes I can't tell... are NT90 and FirefightnRick the same person? You never see Clark Kent and Superman in the same place....and those two same to sing the same negative song over and over....Just sayin'
  2. It will be someone in the West, and probably a travel partner for Southern Miss. It will NOT be anyone in the northeast, including Army. I would doubt it is any Texas or Louisiana school.
  3. First of all, the head coach of a university rarely makes a visit to a school. Each assistant coach has a territory that he is assigned to recruit. When the college coach arrives at the school, he meets with the HS head coach and asks which players can play at his level. The HS coach has a list ready with the players vital statistics (including his grades) and a film of each players top 15-20 plays. If the college coach likes what he sees on film and on paper, he will ask to meet the player. As far as finding any hidden gems, there is no early advantage. A couple of years ago, we had a DL from South Garland committed to us until a week before signing day. Oklahoma had not offered him until the last week. Once the kid got an offer from OU, all the loyalty to and from us went right out the window. The college coaches have looked at hundreds of players. There are no "hidden gems", just players that one school had rated lower than another that ended up being better than they thought. And I NEVER saw or heard of a head coach pushing one school or another on an athlete. The HS head coaches provide information to the college guys. That is all.
  4. I continue to read how some schools have perceived advantage in recruiting because the new head coach has "Texas ties". I coached high school football in Texas for 27 years. I saw players I coached sign with schools in the SEC, Big 10, Big 12, C-USA, and the Sun Belt. I even had two play for NT under two different staffs. Two of the players I coached are currently in the NFL. In all that time, it never once mattered to the player that the coach had "Texas ties". All that mattered was the size of the school, the conference in which they played, and the degrees offered. The kids could not care less that the head coach or any assistant coach was or is from Texas. Additionally, it never mattered to any player that their high school head coach or position coach attended a particular college. In many cases, they knew where the coaches went to school, but that did not mean they were going to consider or follow that choice. Again, it came down to the best offer the player could get. As a coach, we did try to guide the kids choice. I would ask 1) Do you like the school? 2) Do you like the coaches? 3) Do you think you will get a good education there? If the answer to all three was yes, I told the athlete to sign and go where they wanted, regardless of conference of size. In all the time I coached, I NEVER saw any coach do otherwise. We also told them to honor their commitment. Once you made a verbal commitment to a school, you should honor that commitment (although the current staff at Texas Tech made us rethink that commitment to them). So, the fact that a coach has been in Texas at some point in their coaching career is WAY overrated. The kids really don't care about that and it doesn't take a genius to go see who Allen, Cedar Hill, and DeSoto have graduating this year.
  5. This is one of the benefits of hiring someone who has been a head coach prior to UNT. Coach McCarney know a lot of people and I'm sure will hire us an excellent coach to fill the position. I have NO worries at all about this hire or his timing. The man knows what he is doing.
  6. I cannot possibly tell you how much I am ready for you to find a different topic.... or a different team to root for.
  7. My take on the O'line is that we are asking them to do something they weren't really recruited to do. They are downhill, power blockers. Now, because of our skill kids, they have had to switch to zone blocking. I think our lack of dominance from them this year as opposed to last year is the difference in scheme. If you remember, we started out as a zone scheme last year, and struggled. When we went back to crushing people's guts, we got better. Actually, I think we will be fine in spite of losing 4 starters.
  8. #2 Pegram seems to have lost a step. I remembered him being faster last year. The ACL may have healed, but he just doesn't seem to hit the hole like he did. I thought he was our best back last year when he got hurt. #22 Jimmerson seems to have solved his ball security issues. They also seem to be calling more plays that don't allow him to just run anywhere he wants. #3 Minor is playing more each week. He looks like he is going to be a stud. #8 Marshall seems to be losing playing time. I know he is a freak athlete, but he just doesn't seem to make many plays. #6 Ellis has almost disappeared. He comes in as a pass rusher, but not much else. I really expected big things from him. #24 and #27 Wade and Lee seem to finally be playing at the level we looked for at the beginning fo the year. I think both have fought health issues and finally healhy are kicking butt. #32 Scott is by far the best MLB. #43 Wallace is just too slow. #63 Moore is going to be a great player for us the next 3 years. #70 Wallace is getting better each week. He will be solid for us in the middle for the next two years. #1 Smiley, #4 Kidsy, #9 Harris seem to be the WR of our future. The SR's we're losing don't seem to be anywhere as good as the young one's we have coming. I'll hang up and listen to your comments.
  9. And at the same time, North Texas has increased attendance from 16956 (2008) to 21030 (2014). That's a 24% increase while others are watching their attendance decrease. Further, we have only had 1 winning season in that stretch. RV has to get a lot of the credit. A 24% increase is substantial.
  10. I think we miss Orr more than anyone else that graduated. Our MLB's don't make plays and cannot go sideline to sideline like he could. The biggest problem with our defense right now is poorly we tackle. We tackled poorly against UTSA last year and it looked like a repeat of that yesterday. When we tackle well, we play well. The offense is going to make their plays. The key is keeping an 8 yard play an 8 yard play. Right now, we miss and make it a 25 yard play and it is killing us.
  11. I'm not sure that is good or not. I wouldn't mind them being out of bowl contention before Thanksgiving. But, it doesn't look good for the conference. Go Lobos!
  12. Who also took us to 4 straight bowl games, including one win. Give me boring and bowl games (as opposed to what we got in between).
  13. And it is good to have Daryl Mason back
  14. We will be fine. You knew going into this game that everything would be happening a lot faster for DJ. He has settled in. He is still composed. Don't worry about the first half of this one. He will learn. The real season starts for us next week. We must go 4-3. We should go 5-2. Win or lose today, the MUST wins are the next two weeks. Settle in. Watch our young one's grow, and chill a little. There are a lot of good things going on.
  15. I would like to thank Houston and SMU for their decision to leave C-USA. In 10 years, the AAC will be the equal of the Sun Belt (a collection of misfit privates). C-USA and the AAC are clearly going in opposite directions. Again, thanks to anyone at Houston and SMU that had anything to do with that decision.
  16. That would be awesome. My fear is that we go 6-6 or 7-5 and don't have a place to go. Ft. Worth would be a great consolation prize. I still say 7-5 and New Mexico Bowl, but here's hoping for Ft. Worth.
  17. Even if you are right and we have 5 home games, I'm fine with it. We will have road games at SMU, La Tech, So Miss that are all within driving distance. That means I can see my team 8 out of 12 games. I'll take that. It won't be as good as last year where 11 out of 13 were within driving distance, but I'll still take it.
  18. And, we are 2,826 ahead of last year at this time, averaging 20,240 La Tech had 26,004 at their only home game. UAB has averaged 28,368 through two home games. Southern Miss has averaged 24,142 through two home games. Rice 17558 in their only home game. Fla Atl had 21,226 in their only home game UTEP 34,200 through two home games. Fla Int 10,486 after two home games. UTSA had 33,472 at their only home game. I know its "bad scheduling", but we are the only one with 3 home games so far.
  19. I have a real one, but would love a mini too. Where/how did you get it?
  20. My understanding was that they would need to order 200 with the initial order and were unsure that they would sell that many. I assured them that they would, and I asked about a "Flying Worm" mini as well. I was told that they had asked about those and would have to order 300 in the initial order. Again, I assured her that there were enough people that would want one that they could sell them as well. No word on whether the order was placed or if my assuranced actually did any good.
  21. Just wondering which win was more satisfying....The Bowl win over UNLV or the complete destruction of SMU? Can't go wrong either way, but which one would you pick?
  22. Just a quick count..so I may be off a little here or there. 39 vs Texas State 34 vs SMU 33 vs New Mexico State 28 vs Louisiana Monroe 23 vs Tulsa 22 vs UTEP
  23. I think this is probably your best post, like ever...
