I agree with everything Coach McCarney said. I would rather have a 300 yard rushing game than a 300 yard passing game any day. More time of possession. Their defense gets worn out instead of ours. Fewer turnovers. Fewer possessions for the opponent. Our running game is not boring to watch if you know what you are looking at. It is fairly complex. Did anyone else notice the frontside counter we added for the bowl game? There is a lot more too it than many think. Our QB is asked to make presnap reads. I would rather have a QB that can do that and check us into the right play than one that has to improvise to get out of a bad play. It is much better for us to run on first down and have 2nd and 6 than to throw incomplete and have 2nd and 10. Opens up the playbook for the offense. Restrict the calls by the defense. He built this team around defense, running game, and special teams. It is that same as baseball. Pitching and defense. Keep the ball in the park, don't make errors, and manufacture runs as you can. Some may think it is boring to watch, but I'll take a boring win over an exciting loss any day. And remember, he didn't name DT the starter until late last year (and that was after starting the previous two seasons). He knows who the starter is. He just isn't saying.

I talked to our athletic department last month and this is almost exactly what I was told. They said some schools are sold in a package and therefore at discount. North Texas is not usually included in that package and therefore many retailers make the decision not to carry NT merchandise. Don't know what the solution is, but there has to be one. Maybe a question we can ask at the Mean Green event tonight.

I had thought #16 was Pete Harvey as well. He sure is the size and runs like I remember him.

I also remember a #40 that played corner named Bobby Owen(s) from Pampa. My dad coached him. He was recruited as a WR, but was moved to Corner when he got to NT. This #40 may be the same kid.

That would be the GREAT J.T. Smith returning punts. Other greats on that team are Jordan Case and Ron Battle. NT wins the game 15-6 to remain undefeated (Miss St. cheated and got caught). We already had wins over $MU, UTEP, Southern Miss, and Richmond. We would go on to beat Memphis St the following week and crush La Tech to end the season 10-1. The only loss was at Florida St. Good times.

You don't run the QB when you only have one. That has been the case the last couple of years (and DT was slow anyway). I think you will see more of the QB running this year. It seems that we have 2 QB's of somewhat equal ability, so if one goes down we still have another. And, remember when McCarney came here he said he didn't want a QB that was a statue. DT was close to that. You can see by the QB's they have recruited that a more mobile QB is preferred. I look for more read option this year.

UAB either started or moved up in 1994. I remember they came to Denton as a new I-AA and beat us 14-19 in 1995 (maybe my personal low point with our program). That was after UAB lost to Alabama State, SW Louisiana, Jacksonville State, Western Kentucky, and Middle Tennessee. Their only win was the week before against mighty Wofford.

I agree that Coach Moore was a terrible hire for North Texas. I have no doubt that he is a good guy and deserving of his awards, but at NT he was in way over his head. Coach Moore took a couple of the best teams we have ever had and went 11-11. I remember at the time how glad I was when he left. I also remember how glad Tech was to get rid of him too. He was almost a complete disaster in Lubbock as well. He started as a head coach with seasons of 5-6, 6-5, 1-9-1, 4-7, 3-7-1, 4-7, 4-7 for a total of 27-48-2. I'm glad he found success somewhere else. No matter how it turned out for us, I'm glad we didn't wait for it. And, I wish NT would take it off the website.

These guys are next on my "payback" list. I think I'm going to skip the trip to Austin and go to UAB instead. I remember them beating us in '95 when they were a start-up I-AA. VERY low point for me. Will be nice to see us give them a butt whippin' in person. It was fun last year at Southern Miss. I expect this one to be fun too.

Like I said. Not speculation. He pretty much ignored us in the spring. A couple of Big 12 schools pulled their offers after a poor senior year. I would be surprised if he ever makes an impact (more "not speculation"). This is not a big loss for us.

He is going to LaTech. In the spring he said SMU was too close to home. He wants to go away from home. It doesn't matter that NT is a better place. It is too close to Rowlett.

Crap like that in Arizona and at Texas in '88 is why I don't care if we play either one of them anymore. If Texas wants to play us, they need to come to Denton and we get to use the refs of our own choosing. And, the team this year beat two 10 win teams. In our entire history, I can only find one other with over a 10 win team (Boise St in 2000) The '75 team only beat one team with a winning record, although beating Tennesse was maybe our biggest win ever.

I left the 2002 team out of the top 5 because they didn't beat anyone outside of the conference until the bowl win. Even that win was over a 7-7 team. They also lost to a 4-8 Arizona team and lost 5 of 6 to start the year. I had them as our #7 team overall. The '75 team was 7-4, but did have wins over Tennessee and Houston. That Houston win looked better when they won the SWC the next year, but that Houston team went 2-8. I placed all three of those Fry teams ('75, '77, '78) slightly lower without bowl scalps. Today, at least two of those teams would have gone to a bowl. I thought the '56 team was worthy of consideration, but I didn't include them because so many of their wins were over non-IA teams.

You could see this was going to happen at Southern Miss. When every player that traveled gets in the game EXCEPT Bergland, you knew his fate had been sealed. I just think there is something VERY wrong with this young man. I don't know if it is attitude, smarts, effort, or something else. I hope he gets it figured out soon.... and I hope he gets his degree. Football will be a small part of this man's life in ten years. I really hope he walks away from all of this with his diploma. Since one of them spent time at NT with Coach Fry, maybe he will get it right on game day. So far, I have yet to be impressed with any national media coverage. I would rather them not say anything than to put out incorrect information. We're counting on you Mentioned Best.

Notice about 4 minutes into the video that the TE is standing up next to the tackle. Hayden started doing that at NT with our Tight End Ron Battle. It became known as an "Iowa End" since everyone saw it on tv, but it really should be know as a "NTSU End".

Biggest Plays of the Year Goalline stand vs. Rice – 8 plays inside the 10 and the Owls still have not reached the endzone. Pick 6 vs. La Tech – Zac Whitfield returns a pick 56 yards with 2:00 left in the first half. La Tech had dominated the Mean Green for the first 26 minutes of the game. NT takes the lead at the half and gets a road win. Thompson 26 yard run vs. Ball State – Tied at 27, NT was on the verge of coming back from an 18 point deficit. Thompson shows his wheels and NT gets on a roll. Blocked punt vs Georgia – Starts the 3rd quarter with NT tying the game at 21. We didn’t hold on, but I still come across casual NT fans that first took notice at that point. Chancellor 85 yard TD vs Idaho – Leading 7-6 with 3:00 to go in the first quarter, Chancellor gets loose for a bomb. NT never looks back and wins 40-6 Chancellor 65 yard punt return vs. Rice – Trice drops the pick six, Chancellor scores on the next play. NT 21-16 at the half. Defense shuts out Ball State in the second half – Second half possessions were :Miss 51 yd FG, Turn over on Downs, Punt, Punt, INT Lairamie Lee 20 yard INT return vs. Middle Tennessee – NT had just scored in the 2nd quarter to take a 14-7 lead. Lee takes the pick six to the house and takes the fight out of the Blue Raiders. Coming off the loss at Tulane, this game was a huge win. Chancellor 61 yard pass vs. La Tech – With Tech leading 10-0 and our offense not doing much, Thompson finds Brelan for the TD. Changes the momentum and possibly the season. Jimmerson 42 yard run vs. Rice – Rice leading 16-7 and threatening to run away with the game. Jimmie pops a sweep and gets NT back in the game. Defensive stop at Southern Miss – Thompson throws an interception on our first drive. The defense holds and Southern Miss misses the field goal. Fifty five points later, NT left no doubt. Blocked punt vs Tulsa – Tulsa leading 10-7. Mean Green special teams again block a punt for a score. 42-10 Mean Green. Byrd 82 yard run vs UTEP – Miners hanging around at the half. NT not playing particularly well. Byrd gets loose. NT rolls. Chancellor 46 yard TD vs Southern Miss – Defense holds after an early turnover, Chancellor gets loose, NT crushes the Golden Eagles. Byrd 91 yard TD vs. Tulsa – First drive of the second half last all of one play. Game over. Did I miss anything?
