  1. Daniel Meager has been hired to teach Middle School social studies and be a varsity football coach at a small school district outside of Longview. He is getting married in Novemeber. I would say Daniel Meager is doing really well.

  5. even a weakened WAC, at least for the next few years, will be more nationally recognized than the Southland. If they can get the Montana schools to join or some really top-flight FCS school to jump up (like Marshall was a few years ago), I thnk the WAC can be a good conference again. But if their football teams don't do much, they'll be just a mediocre-midmajor conference. For UTA, it's a huge step forward for us anyway. I've wondered about losing the stage home-court advantage myself, and I'm a season ticket up there, prolly seen 60 games at Texas Hall over the years. 1000 fans in a 7000 seat hoops arena will seem kinda empty, but I'd like to think we could average 1500-2000 the first full season with the draw of the WAC and the new arena to get first-time fans in there. I like the idea of a home-and-home in the same season...if the first game is intersting, that could lead to an emotional atmosphere for whoever hosts the second game. OUr first game in the new arena could be Feb. 1 against UT-San Antonio, according to something I saw on the internet the other day. Looks like a couple of small guards left our team, and we were able to sign a couple of strong 6'5 and 6'7 junior-college power forwards. Hopefully this will help our rebounding woes...we were so small last year and got clobbered on the boards.

  7. Quote Before Tony Mitchell left for the FIBA U-19 World Championships in Latvia this summer, North Texas coach Johnny Jones gave his freshman one bit of advice: Just go out there and play. Getting caught up in the situation would have been easy for the former Dallas Pinkston standout. Click Here to Read Entire DRC Article Click here to view the article

  9. --- All of those bank bailouts occurred in 2008.... before the 2008 election. ---I very much agree with spending cuts.... but not just to programs that were put into place by just the other party which seems to be the big problem. There are two issues to a balanced budget.... more income ( taxes.. I don't want new ones just just SOME of the old ones put back ) and less spending which partly occurred because the unnecessary Iraq war and those insane earmarks really that went crazy. Just don't cut things that should not be cut even if a member of the other party got it passed. --I get tired of hearing those imply the debt problem just occurred after the current guy walked it... it didn't.

  10. ---We had a surplus in 1999, in Texas and USA,(largest in history in USA and $6 billion in Texas) We lowered taxes or in the case of Texas, taxes were lowered or eliminated for some.... and now we have a problem...both places. None of your taxes in Texas were lowered unless you were certain businesses (often know as big contrubutors). I don't think lowering either helped the economy any either place. It is not so much about actually raising taxes but just restoring what once existed... In Texas that wouldn't be a dime more to most people since they got no cuts to start with. ---Some just don't get that less money comes in is a problem unless other sourses appear or the economy improves GREATLY which in Texas would mean more sales/gasoline tax collected ... which hits all of us and not just the buinesses that got those cuts. It is likely you got zero tax cuts from Texas and even the claims about a tax rate decline in property tax is off-set by increased evaluation..... pay attention... you likely got nothing....maybe higher local property taxes as a result..and these budget problems now and underfunded schools and social services. --- To all those so called conservatives [i think I am actually one, not a so called one] explain why 1788 - 2001 had a total national debt of $5.5 trillion, but after the eight "conservative administration years", 2001-2009, it went to $11 trillion and you say more cuts is a good idea. ... could it be things weren't as claimed. Don't say 9-11... or else also explain WWII debt which was many times more expensive.... even with the difference in the value of the dollar. You are being conned. ..

  16. By the way, all freshmen have now been assigned numbers and they are posted on the athletic site. The only freshman missing is Kendall Washington. Must he sit out a year even though I don't believe that he actually enrolled at Iowa, Washington State, or any place where he held an offer? I assume that all were here to choose their number (but yes I know how to spell assume).

  18. Freshman reported on July 7th and have been working out as a unit for the first two weeks before joining the rest of the team next week. As I understand freshman QBs have been throwing with the upperclassmen after their respective workouts.

  19. I was at the athletic center on Tuesday night and saw about 50 or so players running and practicing routes. The only freshman that I could pick out was Cooper Jones, QB from Lone Oak. He looks the part, every bit of 6'5 if not taller and probably 230. I also saw LD out there running, looking fast as always. I believe I might have saw Travis Ellard, OL. I saw a big guy moving pretty well with red hair, he is the only one I know of that has red hair.

  20. National prominence? We were in the Top 20 for two weeks in his time in Denton. That is amazing considering we've never reached that level since, but it's hardly nationally prominent. Could you name all the schools that were in the Top 25 for three weeks or less last basketball season? Blakeley has the best winning percentage for a coach we've ever had (at least among those with several seasons). But he's third in wins, and never reached or won a postseason game. People always say we need higher standards at NT. Naming the court after Blakeley would hardly debunk that thought. On the other hand, retire Lyons jersey already. Now that he's graduated there is no excuse.

  23. Saw a digital billboard today, had the UTA and WAC logos and it said: "A Whole New Ballgame" Sorry, but bragging about going to the WAC is equivalent to boasting about shagging Ann Margret. It may have been a big deal in the past, but nowadays.... not so much.

  24. There is no rationale after retiring two Women players jerseys that the same should not be done for Lyons and a few other men players. Mitchell and Reedes (sp) were great players but I am not sure ether should have had their jerseys retired. To me to get an honor like that should require national prominence and in NT case would probably limit that honor to Joe Greene and perhaps Abner Haynes. Bill Blakeley was a colorful coach who won primarily with an inherited team and once those players graduated was basically a .500 coach and was terminated. Bill was fun and his teams played exciting basketball but the facts are that he just never could recruit well enough to being even close to the record he had with Robbins/Tubbs recruits. Blakeley's lack of success in recruiting was no doubt do to very restricted resources, university going independent, and the rampant recruiting cheating in those days. His pubic complaining about lack of resources was probably a big factor in his firing. Blakeley was honored as a NT HOF selection. A honor he deserves, but IMO his record does not merit more. Unfortunately, the days of naming sports venues without large donations involved is just about gone. As in the case of the Dickey practice field fiasco, money does talk.

  29. yeah... a playoff would be great, until it gets expanded... then expanded... and then the Sunbelt Champ has to play the WAC Champ to get that 32nd seed... sooo instead of travelling to a big stadium with a big time program, we play at a neutral site against a boring opponent... that will just drive recruits our way in droves... I agree with Meanmag... playoffs are much more difficult for football than they are for basketball...unless you restructured the FBS entirely it would be very hard to do

  30. Because maybe they're brand new to the whole North Texas thing and are coming by to check it out, you know, potentially thereby increasing the fan base. Please, for the love of all things, refrain from posting photos of people in the stadium wearing the wrong color. It doesn't make people want to return. Unless there are 30,000 people on GMG.com that can fill the new stadium every game whilst wearing the perfect shade of green as measured by some secret laboratory, let people wear what they want to wear. They'll get the green shirts soon enough once they become repeat customers.

  31. While I enjoy this forum and the work that everyone puts into ti, it seems that the last batch of recruits have pretty much come outta nowhere, whiie it seems every recruit posted on here verbals to another program. What's up with that?
    1 point
  32. Not if you're in the Sun Belt ... then every game is meaningless because you've got no shot at a higher bowl. If we had a 16 or 32 team playoff then every conference champion could be invited along with some at larges. Then every team could begin the season knowing they could win the national championship no matter how unlikely it would be.

  33. I can't dispute whether Blakely is the best coach we've ever had, but CMJ is right. Court-naming needs to be reserved for someone who wins some postseason games. Preferably someone who wins many over several years.

  40. What I'd like to see now is an annual Metroplex Classic during the Christmas season WAC (UTA) CUSA (SMU) Sunbelt (UNT) Big East (TCU) These are all mid-major programs; as TCU will be in the basement for a number of years. The tournament could be at the American Airline Center or rotate each year in Ft Worth, Arlington, Dallas or Denton (@ Bill Blakeley Court). Of course this would be a 2-day tournament (Friday night & Saturday evening) You could include the women's teams or top HS teams in Tarrant, Denton, Collin & Denton counties. Bring in Midwestern State to play A&M Commerce. (not sure if they are in the same conference. Anyway, what better way to showcase these Metroplex schools in front of the top area HS recruits. With SMU's haul, UNT's haul and better recruiting from UTA & TCU, there should not be any excuse for this not to happen! Brett Vito can call the head coaches/ AD's to obtain commitments. All the local papers and media will be ready to call out SMU (to the entire metroplex) when they so NO!

One party does not have the market cornered on family values or the lack of them or morality or patriotism, or even Christian values though they love to claim they do.......As I heard Micheal Reagan (Presidential son) once say, if you are Patroitic and a Christian. you vote Republican... 50. Sort of - but a god, deep defense or puck possession style can make anyone look good when they click. When Chris Osgood gets in the Hall of Fame, he should immediately get on all fours and let Lidstrom, Kronwall, Rafalski, Wheelchair Russian, Larry Murphy, Chris Chelios and everyone else who wore the winged wheel have their way with him like a white girl at a late night meeting of Japanese business men. Osgood was an above average goalie, but there are countless goalies who could have won as much or more if they would have had his situation. I think they just need to draft the best available and not worry if it's a D-Man. The last time they picked this high, they convinced themselves they needed a D-Man first and reached on Richard Jackman, who was a total bust. Take the best talent available and don't look back.
