Director Of Sports Medicine Explains Our Injuries

In re the unusual # of unique foot injuries - Perhaps the shoes our athletes are wearing should be looked at with a critical eye - by a top notch ortho- foot specialist to determine whether they offer the proper construction and quality to best protect our guys. I'd ask the guys their opinion of the shoes too. Perhaps there's nothing there but it's worth investigating - afterall, it's one thing we know they have in common.

That is an excellent point and could also be a cause of the knee injuries.

I just wrote RV and mentioned the question since there is validity behind the question. Lets see what he says.

Straight from RV (out at FAU)

"Thanks for your email. We never rule out anything, but the various injuries we have incurred( broken leg, broken ankles, ACLs, shoulder tears, broken collar bone) do not point to a.single factor. Houston lost Case Keenum to an ACL last week and they wear different shoes. And Texas Tech, Maryland, and Hawaii have not had the rash of injuries we have had. But we will continue to check everything to take care of our kids.

Unfortunately we have had a string of bad luck and I hope like I'm sure that you do, that it is over. Go Mean Green!

Sent from his Iphone. Gotta love that he took the time to respond when I even told him don't worry about it.

While I certainly appreciate the swift reply from RV to your inquiries - Perhaps I should have been a little more specific - I was not referring to ACL injuries or broken bones, but specifically to the unusual number of Lisfranc ligament tears like that suffered by JJ Johnson - I believe Dustin said that we've seen 4 such injuries in the past 2 years. In an earlier report or interview, it was said that some trainers never see this injury - in this piece, Dustin said they are racking their brains to try to figure out a reason for the high frequency of this particular problem. Anyway, I was simply making a suggestion that the "equipment" used should be thoroughly checked out if it hasn't already. I know that RV cares deeply about the well-being of the student athletes.

I gathered that. It was a good question.

I think an obvious step to take is to see if the shoes - or anything else even loosely tied to these foot injuries - changed 2 years ago when they started to occur.

Stradford would have totally cleared that lawn chair with proper footwear.

What else changed during that time-frame? Strength and conditioning.

Perhaps there is a particular lift, stretch, speed improvement exercise, or combination thereof that weakens or places undue stress on that specific ligament that people were/are unaware of?

Thought about this, also, but since we basically hire guys that come for the USC strength and conditioning program, and there are no like injuries there, I doubt this has anything to do with the injuries (unless it is a lack of conditioning that is the problem).

There has to be an answer we are way past coincidence, and maybe it is a combo of things.
