Girls Tennis Wins

Denton (2/15/2007) – The North Texas tennis team (0-8) fell 6-1 to UT-Arlington today at Waranch Tennis Complex.

"Coach Lama and I were very proud, once again, of our team," said assistant coach Jeff Maren. "We fought with passion. The girls were very coachable and played a tough team very competitively."

Junior Idalina Franca defeated Simmi Vanrooyen in No. 3 singles 6-4,5-2, ret. She now holds the season record for singles wins.

"Idalina really wore the girl out and played extremely good tennis," said Maren. "She made the opponent run non-stop until she couldn’t run anymore.

Newcomers Hollie Caras and Emi Itabashi defeated Marissa Brown and Daniela Novakova 9-7 in No. 3 doubles.

"We had a great doubles win at No. 3," said Maren. "Hollie Caras and Emi Itabashi won in a thriller and beat a very established team. We felt the team put out a maximum effort today."

The team plays another home match against Texas State at Waranch Tennis Complex tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.

Doubles

1. Schmulbach/Abibutain lost to Peciulionyte/Vanrooyen 8-6

2. Franca/Poe lost to Novakova/Pesic 8-4

3. Carras/Itabashi defeated Brown/Lifonova 9-7

Singles

1. Schmulbach lost to Monika Peciulionyte 6-4, 6-4

2. Abibutain lost to Daniela Novakova 6-2, 6-1

3. Franca defeated Simmi Vanrooyen 6-4, 5-2 (retired)

4. Poe lost to Sofya Lifonova 6-1, 6-0

5. Itabashi lost to Marissa Brown 6-1, 7-5

6. Carras lost to Sara Pesic 6-0, 6-0.
