DENTON (9/12/06) – As if beating SMU 24-6 wasn’t enough on it’s own, on Monday the North Texas football team was named the Division I-A Team of the Week by CollegeSportsReport.com.

Others receiving consideration for the award were California, Missouri, Notre Dame, and Ohio State for their win over Texas in Austin.

The Tennessee Volunteers were named the week one winner of the award.

The victory over SMU was only the fourth in North Texas history and the first since 1990.

After coming off of a 56-7 loss to the defending national champion Texas Longhorns, it was Woody Wilson coming off the bench at quarterback to total 177 yards of offense and Johnny Quinn had his fourth 100-yard game of his career to subdue the Mustangs.

Evan Robertson blocked and recovered a punt for a touchdown to give the Mean Green the lead after the game’s first possession. Jamario Thomas wore down the SMU defense for 90 yards on 25 carries, including 81 yards and a touchdown in the second half.

The Mean Green defense held SMU’s spread offense to only 270 yards and three turnovers on the night.

North Texas will travel to the defending Conference USA champion, Tulsa on Saturday.

Game time is slated for 6 p.m. from Skelly Stadium.

The game can be heard on KWRD 100.7 FM or KNTU 88.1 FM.

How big would it be for North Texas to defeat the 2005 CUSA Champions? Whether or not Tulsa has as good a team as last year does not matter. It would be a huge win for us.
