Plan to reschedule LSU game could be dropped

11:40 PM CDT on Monday, September 5, 2005

From Staff and Wire Reports

DENTON – A three-team scheduling switch that would allow North Texas to play its game against LSU this season could be dropped because of the effect it would have on Louisiana-Monroe, Sun Belt Conference commissioner Wright Waters said Monday.

UNT's game against LSU on Saturday was postponed after Hurricane Katrina.

Proposed changes:

• UNT and LSU would reschedule their game for Oct. 29.

• UNT would move its game against ULM to Nov. 19, a bye week for the Mean Green.

• ULM would push back its game against Louisiana-Lafayette from Nov. 19 to Nov. 26. The switch would leave ULM without a game from Oct. 15 to Nov. 5, which could kill the deal.

UNT has signed a $500,000 contract to play its game against LSU. UNT officials said they hope to have a decision on whether the game will be rescheduled within the next few days.

Briefly ...

The Sun Belt Conference will move its offices from New Orleans to Tuscaloosa, Ala., instead of Lafayette, La., because workers helping New Orleans recover from the hurricane are occupying office and hotel space in Lafayette.

It doesn't look like this scenario is going to happen so we're exploring other options at this point. ph34r.gif

It's not a "perfect" solution but wouldn't make more sense to have UNT and LSU play October 29 and move UNT-ULM to December 3? ULM doesn't have to move a conference game to make that happen.

If UNT wins the conference it gives the same amount of lead time Memphis had for the New Orleans Bowl, six more days than Cincinnati had and seven more than USM had.

That's what I originally thought, but apparently others think differently blink.gifhuh.gif

So now we get to look at who else might be willing to make a move for us. ph34r.gif

---Moving Monroe to the end is a problem for Monroe... they would have two consecutive open weeks... ie three weeks between games. Southern or "no-game" may be what happens. Perhaps someone else with an open date on Nov. 19 could get permission to have a 12th game... The NCAA should understand the unique sitution.

SMU and Houston have no game on that date... they could use the extra game money and would not involve a lot of travel..

It is always easy to find solutions to other people's problems so.......

If La-Monroe does not want two consecutive open dates they could move their game with Florida Atlantic from September 24 to October 29 in order to let North Texas play at LSU. Florida Atlantic is open that week. It would give La-Monroe an open date between road trips to Minnesota and Louisville. The home game with Florida Atlantic is their only home game in September. That would push their first home game back to October 15 Vs Middle Tennessee. That would not be a good situation for them and I could understand why they would not want to do it, but I wonder if anyone has approached them about this.
