This is my favorite time of the year. The Texas UIL playoffs have started. Last Tuesday I saw Ft Worth Eastern Hills defeat Ft Worth Brewer 80-42 at Keller Central HS Gym.

Eastern Hills was led by Robert Lee, who has been mentioned on several internet sites as being interested in playing for North Texas. Lee is about 6-1 or 6-2 and is listed at 170 pounds. He plays wing forward for E.Hills, but is projected to be a shooting guard or possibly a point guard in college. Lee was the MVP of the 4-A Whataburger Tourmament and is clearly the best player on a 24-5 team that is currently ranked #6 in 4-A by the Texas HS coaches poll.

He scored 17 points vs Brewer and probably led his team in rebounds and assists also. He is a sensational athlete. Hills likes to use him on the receiving end of alley oop passes. Twice he slammed home offensive rebounds. Once he went over the back of several much taller players to turn an offensive rebound into slam dunk. Even the Brewer fans were oohing and ahhing over that one. His athletic ability reminds me of former Ft Worth Dunbar star Lance Jackson.

He seems to have very good instincts and plays within his abilities. He is very much a team player, and did not try to force any shots.

The bad news about him is pretty much the same as it was for Lance Jackson. In college, Lee will have to show some outside shooting and ball handling skills. In the Brewer game, Lee left the ball handling to the point guard and seemed uninterested in taking jumpshots even when he was wide open. But if he wants to play here, I doubt NT would turn him down.

      Morris signals it is over

      Morris didn't say anything that most of us haven't already said or felt. Quite frankly, what he said has been true for a lot longer than many of us want to admit. Our lack of commitment to athletics (whether you want to blame it on administration, students, alumni, or realistically all of the above) has set us back and has been an issue for years. It still hasn't changed, and it's going to continue to come back to bite us for years to come. There has to be a clear divide at some point, even though I would argue there's been a fuzzy divide for a long time. It's just a matter of time at this point that it becomes crystal clear. We are not going to be in the top tier of that divide. Our stakeholders (I use this broadly and there are clear exceptions) have made that choice over however many years now. It's just going to finally come to a head.

      Morris signals it is over

      If the basis for this is simply "not Power conference", then sure. The scholarship allotments suggest difference is level of play, though. I know NIL has negated a lot of that at the current P5/G5 level, but I would think that once you get past a certain point, outside the bubble of the P4, the impact of NIL could be watered down and you will still see scholarship limits play into the level of competition in front of you.

      Softball Tournament Bracket

      After UAB swept us in the regular season, then proceeded to win more games we needed them to lose, and lose games we needed them to win, it's nice for ECU to put an end to their season. Hopefully we can win our fourth straight against the Pirates tomorrow.

      If her team doesn't win, her market value and name recognition will quickly decline. The team as a whole and coach make the value.

      Coaching is still more valuable than players. If Tylor Perry and the same team played for Benford here instead of Grant we would have NO NIT Championship.
