Slinker pleased with start away from home

The NT women struggled all season on the road without a single win in non-conference play. However, opening the Sun Belt Conference schedule with three straight road games didn't go as bad.

The Lady Eagles lost their first contest on the road at New Mexico State, but finished the trip off with back-to-back two-point wins over Denver and Florida International.

"We are very pleased with the way we played on the road," head coach Tina Slinker said. "We have never beaten Florida International on the road and we have struggled in close games. But we are playing well now in that situation." NT finally returns home for games against Arkansas-Little Rock on Thursday and against Arkansas State Saturday at the Super Pit.

Young Lady Eagles gaining confidence

After winning three of its last four games, NT is beginning to get the winning attitude it has looked for all year.

"I think the biggest difference is we are just getting more mature," Slinker said. "We are starting to put it all together, and having some maturity out of our young kids is starting to pay off."

Slinker added that after the Denver newspaper called her team "the lowly North Texas," she wrote on the board in the locker room that out of the seven games we lost that four went to a postseason tournament last year and three were ranked in the top 25. She said that now that the young players are realizing that, they are gaining more confidence.

Defense helping NT get its swagger

The NT men's team has allowed its opposition to make 40 percent of its shots on the season, but during the Mean Green's two-game winning streak, defense has played a big role.

The Mean Green made big plays on defense to hold off Denver down the stretch and held Florida International to a season-low 29 percent shooting from the field.

"The kids really feel a little different about ourselves and some of our guys have started to get that swagger about them," head coach Johnny Jones said. "They were able to bore their necks last night and win the game on the defensive end."

Sun Belt Players of the Week

Malerick Bedden of South Alabama was named the Sun Belt Conference men's Player of the Week. Bedden averaged 16.5 points and five rebounds per game last week as the Jaguars jumped to the top of the standings in the West Division.

NT trails the Jags by one game and will face USA on Jan. 31 in Denton. South Alabama's Whitney Woodard was named the Sun Belt Conference women's Player of the Week after she notched her first career double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds in a game last week.

Woodard's Lady Jaguars are undefeated sitting atop the Sun Belt Conference West Division.
