  1. The question seems to come up every time someone mentions the successes, no matter how minor, of any other school. What have you done for UNT? This invariably devolves into a series of oneupmanship until someone comes through having bought season tickets at the old field where Willis Library now resides. We all have our reasons for donating, but it really boils down to two things. 1) It's part of our entertainment budget, and it's a place where we've found comfort, friendship, and lifelong enjoyment. 2) We're contributing to the embetterment of the university, and by improving the athletic program, giving a few kids a chance at an education and handing the university a nice marketing tool by which it can recruit better faculty and students. We mostly suffer from a common syndrome too: I was here first, and it was better when I was here. I came to UNT four years ago. In these four years, I've lost my house and my wife. However, I gained an education, a new career, and was picked up along the way by a curmudgeony UNT fan who saw fit to give me enough employment while in school to keep my head above water. It hasn't always been the most rainbow unicorn journey, but I got through it, and I'm grateful to those involved. So here I am, a freshly minted member of the Mean Green club (although at admittedly nominal levels). Why did I choose to contribute? Because UNT gave me an opportunity, and UNT athletics indirectly provided me with the means to seize it. So I keep coming back, and I give back (although at admittedly nominal levels). And I sell it to others. Actively and aggressively. How? Think again about why we keep coming back. Reason number 1. It's entertainment dollars. Somebody who is considering coming to games, buying season tickets, and God willing, making a donation, needs to enjoy themselves -- at their own pace, and in their own way. That might mean having the wrong shirt, or sitting in the wrong section, or screwing up the eagle claw (something I never learned how to do). But if there's BBQ, music, beer, football, and everybody is enjoying it, then UNT football is one of the best entertainment values going. I view everyone who walks through that gate as a potential customer. Apogee and UNT is our store, and those are our potential clients. We talk to them, find out what they're looking for in a college gameday experience, and we provide it. The correct shade of green, the alma mater lyrics (which I never learned), the hand gestures. Those things come organically with time. The bitter memories of derision and feeling unwelcome after 100 posts about who did what wrong after every game? Those are instant and permanent. So here's my challenge to the mean green nation this fall. Let's try being the kinder, gentler curmudgeony crowd. People will come to check things out. Let's give them a beer and a rib. Answer any questions they have. Get to know them. Invite them back. And if it's really a burr under your saddle, buy them a t-shirt in the shade o' green of the week. Get them coming back, and start soliciting more commitment, but always as a benefit to them, never as an obligation or challenge to "be as good a fan as I am." Also always keep in mind that what they perceive as benefits may vary wildly from you perceive as benefits, so listen and be mindful of this. We all love this program. Let's project to others why and share it with them.

  4. Why do that when we can just attack the OP for not being politically neutral...though we all knw his political leanings, have no right to act shocked, and look even MORE ridiculous for pretending he's the only one around with a bias.

  5. What makes me want to quit donating? Is threads like this. Who gives a flying f-ck. This program needs money and more fans. Neither of which hinge on whether fans can attend practice. I read threads like this and think to myself maybe it is time to quit throwing good money after bad. We will always be small time. Unfortunately for me I have some sort of addiction to the hope of better days for the Mean Green. So I keep sending out the checks. On a side note. My wife and her entire family attended Ohio State. My father in law and I give about the same amount of money to our respective universities. He gets a bumper sticker and the right to buy 4 nose bleed seats on the 50 yard line. That's it! What have I recieved? Well I get the right and do buy four club level seats that cost less than his nosebleed seats at the horseshoe. I have attended multiple events in Houston for donors and prospective donors. I have had dinner with the university president. I have had drinks with representatives from the athletic department in Houston. Not to mention the usual gifts from umbrellas to grill sets and so on. As I said before. I don't donate that much! Especially when compared with major universities. Yet here we are discussing the 5 fans that want to see a practice and at what giving level that should be. Instead let's discuss how being a Mean Green fan and donor is the best deal in college sports and according to the attendance and donor levels no one seems to give a crap. I could care less about open or closed practices. What I do care about is that at some point we either hit critical mass or people get tired of trying. Ok that turned into a rant, sorry. Dear God please let this be a winning season This post has been promoted to an article

  6. I think the single coolest thing about North Texas football right now is the affordability. I had been trying to strong arm my mom and aunt into the MGC (aunt is a unt ex-student who is engaged to a UT t-shirt alum...guess who she roots for) but I'm gonna see I'd I can't just get them into some season tickets. Baby steps.

  14. Oh it would be awesome if we upset LSU. I have friends back home buying LSU crap for their baby and they have no ties to LSU. I would love to buy it some UNT stuff after an upset win. I probably will buy it UNT stuff anyways, but that would just make it better lol.

  18. If you think someone who gives 100K to OU doesn't get to attend closed practice sessons, I got some swamp land to sell you. I'm upset, also, but I'm upset because all it takes is 1K to hit the sidelines in a closed practice. That is embarassing for all of our alumni. It just shocks me that people constantly b@#*& about not getting this or that for their donation (the yearly gripe about GMG club gifts come to mind, or the gripe about no party patio at the new stadium). Or, in this case, that people who donate a specific amount get a benefit others don't. If you want to stay a piss ant program, just continue down this merry path. After all, it has worked soooo well. It's a donation to the athletic department. I don't expect anything in return. That's what happens when you donate. I wonder if people on here demand social gatherings or pot luck Sunday brunch when they donate to their church. Jeez.

  22. As long as Southen Miss, UAB, ECU and Marshall are not in a power conference I think all four are tied together. Even if CUSA would have lost UTEP and Tulsa to the MWC, I wouldn't have seen any of the four taking a Sun Belt invite. Those four most likely plus Tulane and Rice would have rebuilt a conference by adding three to six new schools. Depending on what would have been more finacial worthy.

  23. Which are very hard to find ever since the 3 point shot came to college basketball. If he works on lower body strength and increases his vertical, he could be a beast in CUSA. The fact that he has room for this type of improvement is a very good thing. Kinda concerns me that he talked about being very close with his high school coach in one article (talks about the coach being the reason he has become the player he is), yet leaves the program to go to a prep school. It could be that the high school coach was completely on board with the move, but I just wonder if there are loyalty problems. IF that is the case, we may have a hard time holding on to him if he has a break out season.

  29. I wonder if he is related to Kendrick ? Kendrick Nunn is one of the top SG in the nation and a former Texas A&M verbal. Bendord recruited him @ Marquette , signed a former teammate of his there (top player in Illinois in 2011) & we currently have an offer to a current teammate , Pollard, from Chicago. Just a thought ...

  36. h town...i like our chances against both houston and kansas; more houston. LSU...well, lets just say that it wasnt to long ago that App State beat Michigan in the Big House. I know it is not likely for us to beat LSU, but you know, those are very dangerous games for a top ranked team. They look over some one like UNT to the next week and then all of a sudden, you get beat and ruin your chance for Nat'l championship.

  38. Dead on. People who gripe don't realize how good they have it. Our AD will return your freaking emails (so I hear. Never felt the need to bother him, myself), for christ's sake. Houston maybe this link below will help: http://www.meangreen...TCLID=205043246 Yes, folks, that's right. 20 freaking bucks a game for a 20 yard line seats in section 109. And, if you are really struggling financially. buy 3 general admission season tickets for $150. That's right, $50 for a freaking season ticket. There should be no griping at all when it comes to what you get for donating to this program.

  39. Houston Eagle, what a joy to see that missive in print. If you are sitting among similar-minded fans at the games, I want to join your section. That, amigo, was the retort I have been trying to offer for years. To paraphrase a line from a well-distributed book I look at occasionally: He who sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and he who sows generously will reap generously. Give what you can, not reluctantly or under compulsion. Be a cheerful giver. If that happens enough, you may get what you REALLY want (wins). GMG

  41. Turtledove's certainly made a good living at it. For those interested in a decent story about a different Civil War outcome, start with "How Few Remain" by Harry Turtledove. Concept is that McClellan never finds a copy of Lee's orders moving his army north in Sept 1862, thus the Battle of Antietam never happens. Instead Lee successfully invades central Pennsylvania and turns east toward Philadelphia. France and England see this and assume viability for the Confederacy. The also covet the CSA's agribusiness and recognize the CSA and open trade, sending enough naval forces to remove the USA's blockades of Southern ports. Since the CSA is trying for independence, not taking over the USA, Lee is able to eventually bring things to where Lincoln has no choice but to reach a peace treaty and formally recognize the CSA. The next dozen or so books that follow unwind the next century in such a 4-nation North American continent. Texas remains in the CSA. Obviously, the USA and CSA fight again (and again ?). Who invents The Bomb ? And who uses it first ? What roles do Mexico and Canada play ? It's a good story although there are a few ridiculous parts. Turtledove recreates some 20th century happenings in new locations ("bolshevik" revolution, "Third Reich", etc) Some "real" famous people also become famous in this setting, others do not. Check it out, the first book is How Few Remain. If you like it keep going with "American Front". This is different from "Guns of the South" by Turtledove, which is not part of this canon. Guns of the South is a stand-alone book about time travelers bringing AK-47's to Lee. It turns out they are from a near-future white supremacist faction.

  42. I really hope that Tony is one of those players who is so great in college he takes his team very far and everybody in the country knows about him and isn't surprised when he's a lottery pick, rather than the guy that becomes a lottery pick and people wonder why they'd never heard about him. Of course this would mean a magical March Madness run and/or preseason NIT run.

  44. you hate UTSA because you are scared as hell of them it is laughable to hear someone talk about "earning something" while cheering for a team that has had 4 winning seasons out of 16 in the worst conferences in D1-A after "earning it" by dropping down to D1-AA for a decade and a half after "earning it" by sucking so bad for several decades that you had to drop down lets see "earning it" with fan support.......oh yea that would be UTSA that had double the average attendance on unT "earning it" oh if you mean having 7 straight losing seasons in the worst conference in D1-A "earning it" with a single bowl win in the history of the program "earning it" by hiring high school coaches and coaches with losing records VS a coach that has a national championship as the head coach and multiple other 9 and 10 win seasons mocking a team for being added because of TV market only......when that was pretty much the only reason that unT was added if UTSA can mix in a bowl win in the next 8-10 years they will probably have "earned it" as much or more than unT ever has because they are not very good and it is much easier to make bucket of chicken jokes than it is to look in the mirror and realize that for everything you have "earned" you are really not that much better off if at all and that the bucket of chicken brigade is a winning season or two and a bowl win away from having "earned" about the exact same thing that unT has in decades in D1-A football

  45. Haven't you heard? We have worked long and hard to be nothing like UT, TAM, and OU, and, by god, we don't need to go a changin now!! - sarcasm tag. And I completely agree. UNT couldn't pay me to attend a football practice. Hell, I wouldn't have gone to the spring game if not for tailgating and a little music. Now games, those are completely different!
