  1. The first time I saw those uniforms was at Texas Stadium against UTA. I thought they were the greatest thing I'd ever seen. GO MEAN GREEN

  3. He was 6-foot-2 and only 140 pounds. His nickname was Slim. The photo of him in the hoodie is most current. He was the kind of kid who played Little League baseball through his childhood, then when he was too old to play stuck around as a volunteer running the concession stand. He never had any trouble with the law and pulled his dad out of a fire when he was nine years old.

  4. If we began construction two years later than we did, I don't think there's any way Apogee gets built for less than $100 million.

  5. No, it's not. Apogee is a concrete stadium that will stand for 1000 years. Pink Panther stadium will be wiped off the map when the next hurricane blows through.

  6. Some of you may recall that at one time I would post the funnier, more outlandish things I would experience "on tue beat." With my promotion to Detective three years ago and my undercover status I stopped for safety reasons. Well, I promote to Sgt Tuesday and, as such, I'll be bringing some of the crazier stuff from the last three years forward if the demand still exists. So stay tuned.

  11. Check the all Belt sports ratings for the last decade and tell me, FIU is close to NT in overall athletics. I never said anything specifically about FIU's attendance, only that those numbers overall seem to be substantially overstated. Not sure you can successfully argue what someone's else's perception is. I am aware FIU is in a good run in football, but that sure didn't help NT when UTEP was picked over them to go to CUSU. NT had won at the time 3 straight Belt championship and UTEP had historically about the worst football record in the NCAA. You asked if I recall why some thought that FAU was a better candidate than FIU, I gave you an answer. You don't have to like it, but the perception is that FIU does not have the facilities that FAU does, and winning football teams most know tend to come and go. By the way I have heard the story many times by NT and others that their facilities other than the stadium are on a par with the AQ teams and it maybe true for the bottom level of the AQS but I think it is mostly boaster because most fans have never see the facilities at the UT, A&M, Florida, and the real "haves" of college athletics. FIU and NT comparing finances is on the surface foolish. However, you did not dispute that FIU is one of the heaviest supported athletic departments by student fees. By the way with the stadium construction completed, NT fees were raised 7 bucks an hour to 10 total. That has been in effect for less than a year, and would not likely be included in any reported stats if ever because most of it is going toward the debt service cost of Apogee Stadium. There are maybe twenty schools that play FB football that are not heavily dependent on institutional transfers, state funds or student fees. FIU on the stats you are quoting gets millions of more dollars than NT directly from student fees, so if that makes you feel better, great. Other than FIU, being a much younger university and particularly in football; NT and FIU have a lot in common; not necessarily a good thing. They are both in huge metropolitan areas but on the athletic field are viewed as secondary citizens to the powers in the state. Even though both have very large student populations and alum basis, they struggle at attendance and getting attention in sports. Both are very viable candidates for the alliance primarily because of potential and being located in highly populated areas. Despite what many of the CUSA and MWC seem to think, the Alliance current teams are at best a tiny step better than the Belt schools. I think at least half of the Belt schools would be almost immediately competitive in the new Alliance. However, on a perception basis it would be a great move for any Belt team. Those advocating the Belt is a better conference to be in, are mostly fans from teams that are not supposed to be serious candidates. Good luck to FIU, I certainly wouldn't complain if NT and FIU both ended up in the new Alliance.

  14. If the Sanford police had fully investigated the shooting that night, instead of acting from the presumption that George Zimmerman was telling the truth, we could have more confidence in knowing what happened. We do know that Trayvon Martin was unarmed and had a legal right to be where he was walking when he was shot to death. We also know that Zimmerman was told not to chase down Martin by police, and that Neighborhood Watch volunteers are told never to chase people or carry guns. Even if we find out that Martin fought with Zimmerman, he had the right to defend himself too. He was being followed by an adult acting weird and carrying a gun.

  18. The cameras are exposed to the elements, which actually isn't unusual in a stadium. That picture is outdated as the "box" to the far left of the picture is now closed. I'd love to have an all poured concrete stadium, however that would probaby cost $120-150 million. The basketball arena, which is undergoing improvements, is pretty standard for a 1980's era basketball arena. The size itself isn't the biggest issue, it can hold around 5,000 people, it is the asthetics. This is a bit aspirational, but I'd ultimately like to see an arena built on the south east corner of the current Miami-Dade Fair Grounds after they are incorporated into the campus as future student village, and a poured cement stadium with other facilities built where Tamiami Park now is.

  23. How do you know they didn't properly investigate? Why in the world would you drug or alcohol test someone that shows no apparent signs of being intoxicated? How do you explain grass stains on the back of Zimmerman's clothing and and injuries to Zimmerman's face and the back of his head, which could be consistent with being on the ground and being beaten (we don't know, because WE ARE NOT PRIVY TO THE FACTS)? Remember, while following someone may show bad judgement, it isn't illegal. Maybe we should all ignore drunk drivers when we see them on the road way. Don't call police and follow them until police show up, right? Because, who knows, they could run you off the road, confront you with a tire iron, and then you may be forced to shoot them. I guess if that happens, you should go to jail, right? People follow DWIs all the time until police can get there. Does the above situation happen all the time? Obviously not. Could it happen? Yes. This all comes down to what happened when Maritn and Zimmerman came into contact. As far as the girlfriend, I would be highly suspicious of anyone who will only talk through defense attorneys and only to the media. What took so long for her to come forward? And for all you conspiracy theorist out there, the conspiracy just got wider. Yep, the DA of the county didn't believe there was enough evidence to prosecute Zimmerman. So what do you do? Get a DA who will? Let me ask you out there who are clamoring for your own personal version of justice, what if the special prosecutor says Zimmerman can not be prosecuted under state law? Should we take to the streets and burn some crap down? I tend to think Zimmerman will be arrested, either as a result of the special prosecutor's investigation or through a federal civil rights investigation (when the Governor calls and tells a lesser politician that they need to re-investigate a case that one DA has already said cannot be prosecuted, the outcome that the governor expects is pretty clear.). I doubt any state court would convict him at this point.

  30. In the end, it doesn't matter. The fact that he chased after the kid will keep him from being able to claim self defense. I honestly find it kind of sickening to defend a guy who killed a kid in "self defense" when the most lethal weapon the kid had on him was a can of sweet tea. Especially when there would have been no altercation if the idiot wasn't chasing him for the crime of walking while black in the first place.

  41. Again, your making assumptions that you don't know anything about. For all we know, Martin could have picked up a large rock, stick, or could have been on top of Zimmerman beating the crap out of him. Yes, you can beat someone to death. I'm not defending anyone. Not a one of us know what happened, what the witnesses say, what Zimmerman's account of events are, or how the altercation took place. The people who have all of that information and are under emmense pressure to arrest Zimmerman did not arrest him. How do you know he was following Martin because he was black?? Another assumption that you make. It was obviously nighttime and raining outside. A kid unfamiliar in the neighborhood is hanging around outside. Even if he did follow him because he was black, that is not a criminal offense. Laws that apply to police officers don't apply to private citizens. Not syaing it's right, it just is. So just for clarity, do you think the police are corrupt or incompetent? The State has reviewed the case (whatever Florida's equivelent of the Texas Rangers are) and have yet to arrest. Are they in on the conspiracy, also? Do they also not know what they are doing? There is still the possibility of arrest. Thorough investigations take time. It's real easy to pass judgement based on media accounts of events, except that the media rarely has the facts straight. Without the context of the witness interviews, the 911 calls are pretty worthless (who was on top of who? Who was screaming for help?) I seriously hope you never find yourself accused where the police just do what the media demands them to do. But, then again, us UNT grads never have that problem. Just Duke Lacross players. Patience.

  45. I will agree that he probably wanted to play cop. Much like "law students", alot of criminal justice students think they know the law. Hell, much most citizens think they know how to play police just because of CSI and the First 48. However, at the moment this happened, how does Zimmerman know that the person he is following isn't an experienced martial artist? It is possible that Martin did not know Zimmerman had a gun. The point is that we were not there and we are not conducting the investigation.

  46. I am sorry UNT fans, but this FIU fan can no longer be silent. I have seen quite a few remarks on this forum about how FAU is a better fit for "The Alliance," than FIU. How our facilities are second rate, how our fan base is non-existent, and even some disparaging comments regarding our academics. Firstly, I'd like to point out that FIU has outdrawn FAU the last two seasons. We had comparable attendance to UNT this season, keeping in mind that you had one game that drew nearly 30,000 people. Remove the Houston game from the equation and we actually had better average attendance. As is neither FAU, FIU or UNT drew as well as ULL, and when the difference in attendance is 300-400 people it isn't worth mentioning. All this talk about our facilities being second rate is absolute nonsense. Our stadium does have a pressbox, it has 20 skyboxes, is being expanded to just shy of 30,000 seats, and will eventually have even more extensive skybox and concourse level facilities. Neither your stadium or our's is Bryant-Denny, so let's not pretend that there is some huge gulf in the quality of either stadium. Thought I will say, your stadium is very nice. Furthermore, our strength and conditioning facilities and athletic training facilities are second-to-none in the SBC and are on par with many AQ's. Finally, as far as academics are concerned, with the exception of Denver, we have consistently been rated by multiple publications as the top university in the SBC. We have over 3,000 professors for nearly 48,000 students, a budget of over one-billion dollars, and over $42 million in annual giving versus $7.5 million for FAU. It goes without saying that we are better positioned, both athletically and academically, than FAU for "The Alliance," and belong in the conversation just as much as UNT.
