Muschamp: Goals For Defending Third Down

I thought these comments were interesting on a coach's thought process and scheme for defensing third down plays. Items of interest I highlighted below.

Enjoy?

“If you want to be good on third down, you better be able to rush the passer. You better be able to play some form of man, whether it’s split safety or middle field man. But you’ve got to deny the ball on third-and-6 or third-and-7 or less to teams that want to run routes to the first-down sticks. Then, you’ve got to be able to complement things with certain forms of zone to be able to, in those longer yardage situations, let your rush get there. Then, you have to have a nice pressure package and attack protections..."

Defensive goals:

--Limiting an offense to 5 yards or less per play for a game.

--Limiting an offense to 3.3 yards or less per rush."

OK, so you meet both the above goals...seems to me you are really hoping no one like to go for it on fourth and a foot very often. If only UNT could meet these goals on D....hey, we have a coach with a bunch of college experience in charge of the Defense...he should be able to meet these goals, right? I think he can..."Just Do It"! I like Muschamp and the attitude and confidence he brings to his defensive unit. I fully expect DeLoach to bring this same attitude to the UNT defense.

GO MEAN GREEN!

We need to remember that this is DeLoach's first year back....one recruiting season and now in his 2nd recruiting season...he had no say over the earlier signed players in year past. I see definate inprovement over last year but believe more is needed.
