By BRETT VITO / Denton Record-Chronicle

Signees: 18

Starters lost: 2 offense, 3 defense

Top needs: offensive line, defensive line

Filling the gaps: North Texas dipped into the junior college ranks to land four players at need positions. All could make an impact early. QB Woody Wilson, OL Trent Stanley and TE Brian Carlson transferred to UNT at the semester break. DB Roy Loren will transfer during the summer.

More Recruiting

Maybe later: North Texas signed eight high school defensive linemen, a group that included several of the Mean Green's top-rated recruits. UNT is hoping the group will develop and complement a 2005 class that was heavy on defensive backs/receivers.

Still searching: North Texas went looking for junior college defensive linemen to bolster a front that struggled at times last season, was ravaged by injuries and lost a starter in Chris Miller. UNT missed out on its top targets but has five scholarships remaining and is also still looking for a running back.

Coachspeak: "We didn't try to go after a class that was based on the fact that we were 2-9. We went after a class that we thought we help us get right back in there and compete. We feel like we may have signed one of our better classes." – Darrell Dickey

Notable: UNT lost out on Kimball running back Phillip Tanner, who decided to sign with Sun Belt Conference rival Middle Tennessee. ... Kail Krider played in just five games before breaking his leg, and Woody Wilson played in seven games last season before breaking his collarbone. ... Draylen Ross' brother, B.J., is a running back at New Hampshire.

The NCAA does have a scholarship limit of 25. In this case Tech is counting on two things....Grayshirts - kids don't practice with the team next year and receive a scholarship offer next spring making them their first recruits of next year AND some of these recruits won't qualify academically thus won't count against official total.
