Interesting Article on Rating Recruiting Classes.

No one is disputing the fact that the best time to evaluate a recruiting class is after they've had 4 years to play.  Hindsight is always 20/20.

But we live in the here and now.  There are going to be busts in every class.  There are going to be surprises in every class.  We only have their high-school tape to go off of for now.   It's fun to prognosticate how these guys are going to do, but it's not an exact science.

" The best time to evaluate a recruiting class is not when it's signed, but rather, four years after the fact. "

Another defensive post about another low ranked recruiting class that odds say will lead to continued losing seasons.

You want tradition? This is the definitive late January/early February Mean Green football tradition.

This isn't a defensive post.  I have stated for years that the true rating of a recruiting class will be revealed a couple of years down the road.  Just linking an ESPN article that backs up that claim.  Don't let that gloss over your turd in the punch bowl outlook.

So tell me, how was Mac's 2012 recruiting class ranked now and then?

This is a perfect example.  People were extremely happy with the number of 3 star recruits we picked up in that class.

Boone Feldt, David Busby, Mark Lewis, DQ Johnson, Nick Schapps, Jarrian Roberts, Roderick Lancaster and Malik Dilonga.  None of them contributed a thing except Roberts and Dilonga.

The contributing 2 star recruits were:

Sir Calvin Wallace, Rex Rollins, Xavier Kelly, Ryan Rentfro, Carlos Harris and Jamal Marshall with Harris being the best of the bunch.  Wallace left, Rollins kept breaking his collarbone, Rentfro chose to leave.  The remaining recruits never contributed.

That class was rated sixth best in CUSA.

And then how did those two stars perform on the field?

1-11 is the answer.

Thats the part you always leave out. I wonder why.

Missing on 3 star recruits doesn't make 2 stars better, it just increases the level of suck in your program.

Exactly. And also, this is yet another reason why I prefer to emphasize offer lists.

While we won't know for a few years how these kids will all turn out, we do know at this exact second how we are doing competing for recruits we want with other schools.

This is also what separates it from an NFL draft class. We are not at the mercy of who other teams pick. We could, hypothetically, get every single player we want if we are good enough at recruiting them. Obviously that'll never happen, even for Alabama, but the point is we can evaluate ability to recruit and get players we want, today.

Lewis - 0 other FBS offers

Lancaster - 0 other FBS offers

Dilonga - 1 other FBS offer

Schrapps - 1 other FBS offer

DQ Johnson - 1 other FBS offer

Busby - 2 other FBS offers

Feldt - 2 other FBS offers

The vast majority of college coaches who scouted these guys thought they weren't FBS prospects. Unknown guys who not only may not work for those recruiting services, but very possibly aren't even in that line of business anymore rated these guys as three stars.
