HOUSTON -- In his first news conference as a head coach, Tom Herman admitted that as an assistant, he admired the Houston coaching job from afar.

As someone who cut his teeth as an assistant at myriad Texas universities -- Rice, Sam Houston State, Texas and Texas State among them -- he knew the landscape well enough to understand the kind of talent that existed in the state and, in particular, the city of Houston.

"You can get good players," Herman said Wednesday. "That's a lot of the battle. I tell people all the time that the mark of a really good coach is turning an average player to good, a good player to great, a great player to elite and an elite player to a champion. But not even the best of coaches can make average players elite. I think what it says is that the recruiting base within a 200-mile radius is phenomenal around this place."

      A few HSO's

      I was kind of hoping this HSO thread would help me get over the hump and renew the two season tickets I’ve had since the days of dirt at Fouts Field and the old cement urinals there. Unfortunately I, probably like some others, can’t seem to generate any old fashioned enthusiasm for the new version of “ here today gone tomorrow, pass through jocks . Somehow there just seems to be a missing piece; commitment, loyalty, alma mater. Yesterday’s discarded intangibles. Well, today is deadline day, can I break an old habit?

      I gave you a +1, but I also suspect he would not get along with the Grants and Ross's of our world. Would be loads of fun and wins, though.

      For anyone who hasn't experienced the greatness of Hutchins, you should treat yourself the next time you are in either Frisco or McKinney. Some of the best brisket I've had (and other good stuff too). And... since UNT has expanded into Frisco, I guess we can claim Hutchins as a UNT BBQ place 😎

      There’s no contradiction. The average fan/alumni aren’t paying NIL, it’s the big donors and corporations. And they’re only doing it because that’s the way it is under the current, broken system. My 2nd point is that comparing college coaches with college players is neither a fair nor equal comparison.
