(I wonder if our men's team will practice on Saturday, as well??????)

DENTON, Tex. (10/10/07) – The wait is nearly over and the North Texas women’s basketball team is ready to hit the floor to begin preparations for the 2007-08 season. The Mean Green begin with its first practice of the season on Saturday in anticipation for a promising season ahead.

North Texas returns all five starters from last season and 10 letterwinners from last year’s team. The top seven scorers return from last year’s team led by junior’s Amber Jackson and Tricia Lee and sophomore Brittney James.

Senior’s Talicia Sanders and Erica Howard will give the Mean Green one of the deepest low post tandem’s in the conference. Sanders, one of the best rebounders in North Texas history, has a chance to shatter the school record for rebounds in a career. She currently sits with 548 and needs 169 rebounds this season to become the all-time leader at North Texas.

Jackson, one of the most athletic and versatile players in recent memory, averaged just over 10 points a game and six rebounds last year. Lee his 27 3-pointers and led the team in steals with 48.

James was a freshman sensation last year as she scored the most by points by a North Texas freshman since the 1998-99 season. As a starter James averaged 12.2 points a game that included a career-high 27 points.

Yari Escalera, a transfer from Colorado, is eligible this season after sitting out last year. She will handle the point guard duties this season and brings a deep threat as she was ninth in the Big 12 Conference in 2005-06 in 3-point field goal percentage.

North Texas has 15 home games on the schedule this season, including battles with Oklahoma State, Marshall, SMU, and Middle Tennessee. The Mean Green has been dominant at home over the past nine seasons, compiling a record of 79-27.

North Texas opens the exhibition season on November 1 at home against the Houston Jaguars before beginning the regular season at the Winthrop Classic on Nov. 9-11.
